adding muscle and strength while trying to lose weight

Is that possible? how would I adjust my settings on this app to do that? I originally wanted to go down to 145 but maybe i should go to 130-135 then set a weight gain goal of 10-15 lbs so as to put on muscle mass

Have any recommended sources/articles to read up on this? I've had the same questions for my own situation. Thanks!

It's possible, but it's very difficult. Sometimes people who are either new to lifting, obese, or teen aged can pull it off but most people won't see any kind of appreciable muscle gains while in a deficit. Strength can be built in a deficit though not nearly as effectively as in a surplus, and once you become advanced even that is hard to do. The best approach is to lose fat until you are as lean as you'd like to be then focus on SLOWLY gaining weight, all the while you should be doing a proven beginners lifting routine while focusing on adding strength whenever possible. This is the fasted way to lose fat and gain muscle. Trying to recomp (do both at once) can often times leave you spinning your wheels.

It's known in the bodybuilding world as bulk/cut cycling. Here is a decent article about the premise: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/muscle-gain/general-philosophies-of-muscle-mass-gain.html/

I am actually looking to compete in boxing, brazilian jiu jitsu and MMA. So I am not trying to bulk up like a body builder per se.
