Just started exercising, can you do it too much?

Hey all, I am finally down 95lbs, at 215 and am able to run and exercise and such, I started with really fast walking one night for about 45 minutes, then the night after I ran about 1/4 mile until I could not run any more and then walked the rest of the way. Last night I was so sore I just walked the whole time, have been doing pushups, planks, leg crunches, as many as I can do.

Is there such a thing as doing too much? my legs and calves are really sore, but I want to walk and run as much as I can now that I am able to. It's a whole new world that I am loving, lol.

Yes, hence the term "too much."

Well, what would too much be? Is it still ok to go for a long walk if I am sore already? When walking it doesn't really hurt any more after a bit.

The soreness is just a little inflammation, nothing to worry about. In a few weeks it will get a lot less intense, or stop happening altogether.

This is one of those questions where everyone will have a different answer. Yes, you can exercise too much....when is it too much? THAT depends on you. Everyone is different --- 1 hour for me may be too much for someone else and not enough for the guy who slams out 4 hours a day. You have to listen to and TRUST your body....when it says it's time to stop, stop!.

I understand your excitement and I commend you coming this far! Just remember you have a whole LIFETIME to exercise....you don't have to catch up with all you've missed in just a few days =D

I think walking is fine for when you're sore. When I lived in England and didn't have a car, I had to walk *everywhere* I went, soreness or none. So now, when I feel sore and sorry for myself, I still try to get a walk in, even if it's a slow pace (3mph or so). It seems to get the blood pumping through the muscles and can even help relieve the soreness somewhat :)

Disclaimer: obviously if you're hobbling or limping or struggling to put weight on your leg/s, walking should be out of the question.

I feel that walking or low impact exercise is good to do every day if you want too. Intensive exercise like running or heavy lifting would need breaks in between but you could get into a routine of daily exercise but different things each day. For example- Monday run, Tuesday weights, Wednesday elliptical/walk, Thursday weights, Friday run, Saturday walk, Sunday gentle walk. If you start getting niggling pains or lots of colds/flu then ease off and take more rest days. Congrats on choosing a healthy lifestyle.

Your body will tell you when it's too much. If theres pain then it's too much. I'm not talking about being sore though, that's normal when starting new routines/intensities.

I do low-impact cardio, walking, yoga stretches on my rest day. As long as your not doing heavy lifting on the same muscle groups 7 days a week and 7 days of HIIT, you'll probably be ok. Good luck with it, and listen to your body
