Too much salt

I've only started on here recently and I've just realized that I have a real problem with eating too much sodium. I've quit adding salt to my food but I still manage to go over by a lot everyday. I don't automatically look at much else besides calories. How can I cut back on my sodium?

    Reduce consumption of canned/boxed/prepackaged foods.

Less processed food helps. I have this problem as well, and it is ONLY a problem because I tend to retain water and sodium exacerbates this for me. Unless you have a medical condition sodium isn't usually a problem.

make everything so you can control what is in it.
  • I'm having the same problem, but I find it difficult to get something together for lunch at work. This usually means pre-packaged lunches for me. Any suggestions?

Log and track for a while and add sodium as one of your categories. It should be quickly apparent which specific foods are very high in sodium and are causing you to go over on your daily totals by so much.

In short, fast food, canned soups and sauces and deli meats are usually the biggest culprits.

Fast food: Replace it with home cooked meals as much as possible.
Canned soups and sauces: Make your own.
Deli meats: Replace some of them with leaner raw meats.

Some sodium isn't a bad thing unless you have a medical condition. Eating reasonable amounts is fine. You don't have to cut all these things out of your diet. Just work on reducing their consumption to more reasonable levels.

There are a zillion ideas out there for easy lunches you can make and pack yourself. Here are just a few:

To save time, cook and pre-portion food ahead, or cook extra of your dinner and put it in the fridge for lunch the next day. Just as quick as buying pre-packaged lunches, and far tastier.

I wish I had this problem! I consume too little salt. I am supposed to follow a high salt diet per request of my cardiologist :)
