How many hours to work out?

Hello everybody! It's my first day here. I was on treatment and gained 20kg in a year and now I am desperatly trying to get rid of them. I try to stick with 1200 calories intake per day and I go fast walking for 30 mins every day plus 1 hour tennis class 3 times a week. Do you think I should work out more?

I think it just depends what you can tolerate. You don't want to over do it. Nothing wrong with increasing each week you don't have to go full in right away.
  • Thank you for your reply! I just don't want to push myself too much and then give up!

It truly is what you want to push yourself to do . Just last week I got myself to finish a 50 minut circuit training dvd last night I as able to pull 30 minutes circuit training and 1 hr of walking on the treadmill. I was able to push my fat *kitten* 90 minutes with sheer will power mind you lol

But after being able to do that I'm gonna keep pushing myself and I think honestly it all depends on how you feel and what your body can take .

Good luck we're here for you if you need a friend or supporter. You're most welcome to add me:flowerforyou:
  • At 1200 calories a day I think that's more than enough, at least from my prospective but everyone is different. I am on the same calorie limit and have to loose the same amount of weight (I've already lost 4 kg) .I workout 3 times a week tops, because I'm not a sports person at all and I still get results! I burn 100-250 calories from workouts if that's any help.

Weight loss comes from eating in a calorie deficit. Fitness comes from working out. You can do as little or as much exercise as you want, but try to make it something you can maintain for the long haul.

Weight control is all about energy (calorie) balance, not what exercise you're doing or how many hours you're working out or whatever. I workout exactly the same now in maintenance (18 months) as I did when I was losing weight...the difference between the two weight control goals is my consumption, not my exercise.

Exercise is beneficial in that it is just generally good for your overall health and well being...it also increases you body's calorie requirements which can make weight control easier...but the bottom line is your consumption. For this reason, you should adopt fitness goals that go beyond burning calories and losing weight...burning additional calories is a very nice bi-product of fitness, but not the reason for it.

You also have to understand that you "burn" calories 24/7 just existing...and then you burn more with just your day to day activities...these things actually account for the vast majority of your daily calorie requirements. By and large, on average, regular exercise accounts for maybe 10 - 15% of one's daily calorie requirements. Of course, this is different for athletes and/or people who work within the fitness industry and basically get paid to train and workout.

Personally, outside of actually training for an event I've never spent more than about an hour exercising in a given day save for my weekend ride which is usually around 2 hours unless I'm actually training.
  • Thank all of you for your replies. It really feels like you get support once you get in here. I will keep on posting about my results. If you like you can add me!

It's all up to you! Tennis sounds fun and it's great to do something that may not feel like exercise. The right amount will be different for everyone, depending on their goals. Also, keep in mind that you can work out HARD for half an hour, or at a lower intensity for 2 hours and may end up about even, calorie wise. Good luck :)
