Muscle increases metabolism?

I keep hearing 'muscle increases metabolism' what exactly does this mean?
I know the more you weigh the more you burn from any activity,is that what this refers to? Do the few extra pounds really make a difference?

Per lb it takes more energy to just keep muscle going than fat, it also takes up less space.

Yes, but it is a very small effect, on the order of 6 calories per (extra) pound.

People use the word "metabolism" in different ways, usually they mean "how fast you lose weight." Muscle does have an effect, but not a huge one. It's good to use them, though!! :)
