hi there,

bit of an odd one really but just interested if it is possible to loose weight (inches too) through dieting alone?

i know excerise can either allow me to constume more calories, or lose weight fatser but if i was unable to excersise for any reason, (other than general movement / strolls ect) would i be able to loose 'inches'.....or would i just weigh less but with 'loose or un-toned skin?

i have no intention of not trying to excersie but i go back to work tomorow (desk job) and will struggle to find time to dedicate to excerise and may only be able to manage 3 days a week top! an just trying to figure out if its a major thing
Currently id say i eat approx 500 cals less than my goal per day (1200)

thanks

Anastasia

Less than 1200 tends to put people into starvation mode and you will burn (and thus lose) very little. You would probably have better luck eating a healthy 1200 and doing light exercise

Yes, you can lose weight through diet alone. Look at anorexics, they hardly move at all.

Why are you eating so far under your goal? It's called a goal for a reason, and you should eat at or around your goal every day. Some can get away with less if they are short, but I can't tell anything becuase your info is private.

Of course you CAN lose weight w/o exercise. It's mostly about calories in vs calories out, but its not that simple completely. With exercise your body's metabolism will go up and you will burn more calories even when you are just resting. Its better for your heart, too! Even just 30 min a day of walking will improve your physical fitness. Surely you can find 30 min a day to workout? Do you have stairs at your house? That's a great workout! Even if you have to break it up into 3 10 minute segments, something is always better than nothing!

It is entirely possible to lose weight through diet alone. At it's most basic level weight loss is creating a calorie deficit below the level needed to maintain your current physique body. You can create that deficit through diet alone, exercise alone or a mixture of the two.

However, if you go too low on your calories then you enter starvation mood as said previously.

the statement above is correct. basically, as you are, you are starving your body. You need to be focused on eating AT LEAST 1200 calories a day, and they need to be high-quality.....no junk. and you need to eat a variety of types of food, (like not all veggies) you need a lot of protein if you are trying to change your body.....working out will most definitely help. you dont have to overdo it though. I lost 30 pounds by eating 1200 calories a day and burning about 500-900. after a while, my weight loss slowed and stopped because I wasn't eating enough, but i didn't know that. i discovered that if i went out once in a while and ate a big mac during that time, i would actually LOSE abotu 3 pounds by the next day or two, weird, right? no. it's because i gave my body the extra calories it needed. i was on to something. i started eating (gradually) more calories a day increased abotu 200-300 calories a day until i got to about 1600-1800 a day. then i started losing weight again.

    just something to think about!

ok, just to clarify.....a lot of anorexics dont move because they CAN'T. they are not nourishing their bodies enough to exercise. so yeah.....they aren't healthy....and the way they are trying to lose weight is not either.

It's very important that you eat at least 1200 cals. everyday !! But I will say this a few years back I lost 91 lbs. with no exercise. Just did a rotation diet of 1200 - on mon. 1300 - on tues. - 1400 - on wed. 1200 - thurs. 1300- on fri. 1400 - on sat. Then what ever I wanted on Sunday. I lost something everyweek. A few weeks it may have been only a half a lbs. but it was still something ! 8 month later I was 91 lbs lighter. I feel if at that point I would have started to exercise everyday maybe eight years later I wouldn't be 93 lbs heavier. But I reached my goal weight , met my husband and just became lazy. The exercise in the begining is not as important as paying attention to your food intake. Start somewhere ! Add the excercise when your ready, as you lose you'll feel more excited and find time to fit it in. Even if you just start with marching in place while sitting at your desk at work. Good luck on your journey !!
  • Thank you all for your replys and your words make so much sense!, I figure I eat so few cals as I'm so desperate to lose these pesky pounds and I get more motivated when I weigh myself and Ive lost, I know it's not health but I can lose a few pounds in days and although I have lost a little in inches it seems to take so long.
I have a new baby and during the day I focus all my attention on home although we walk at least an hr a day, now I go back to work I worry I'll be to tired once my baby is in bed and will find motivation hard.
In the past I e tried eating my 'goal' but I don't appear to lose anything.
I think I'm not used to my 'new' shape (love handles) and I would be so much happier in myself if I could 'reshape' just a little

    Thank you again :-)

That's my point. I was implying that it isn't the best idea to starve one's self and not exercise.

It is NOT imperative to eat 1200 calories each and every day. Not at all. You can have days where you eat as little as you want, but you better offset them by having days where you eat much more.

Some can get away with less than 1200 calories every single day. This is extremely obese people and people who are very short and already in shape. My wife's goals will eventually force her to go under 1200/day, but she is 5' tall and in shape.

The adverse is also true. If I were to eat 1300 calories/day that would constitute under-eating for me, since my maintenance is 2500 calories. However, I do eat 12-1500 on some days, while on others I'll eat up to 2500.

The average person on here who's goal is 1200 calories can have a couple days a week eating far less, say around 700, as long as other days they are eating around 16-1700. If, at the end of the week, you have the correct deficit for your weight loss goals, you will lose weight.
  • That makes sense!!........looking at my weeks, there are days I'm over but Christmas aside I'm rarly that much under my weeks 'goal'
Here's to getting my a££ is gear and making time for some exercise & losing my stone :-)

    Thanks

    Hi,
Yes you can lose weight without exercise, but like most everyone on here has emphasized you shouldn't go under 1200 cal a day and as a mom with a baby I'm guessing you have activity you're not counting as exercise so you may be really way under the net goal of 1200.
I have some physical ailments that make even walking very difficult. I've been losing this past year thru diet alone, but VERY slowly. I averaged a loss of approx 3 lbs a month. I'm THRILLED with that. I'm ok with going slow, being patient and eating in a way that I enjoy and satisfies me while also being very very healthy.
    good luck and happy eating!
