My daughter is only four and is already overweight. She has been for almost 1.5 yrs already. She starts school this year and I am fearful of how she will be treated by other kids in school. Does anyone have any ideas or heard of any weightloss programs for young children. I am not about to put her on a strict DIET because the big problem being....she doesn't eat badly at all. We don't have junk in the house she doesn't get more than 1 glass of juice a day and no chips, fruit snacks etc are ever in the house. She def doen't eat half the junk that most kids do. Her Dr. has already checked her thyroid twice..all is o.k.

I am just really stressing about this lately and I can't get it off my mind.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

  • I have looked at this a lot online because my stepson is overweight. It's really hard to find calorie intake for kids. Everything I read says to check with your Dr or a nutritionist. Kids are much different than adults.

We have started my stepson doing a food log, he is 11 though. He is tracking everything he eats and drinks and that will give us a starting point so see what's going on. From there we plan on taking him to his Dr and figuring out the best plan for his weight and his age.

Have you tried tracking your daughter's daily intake?

My friend had the exact same problem with her young son. It turns out that while he was eating well, he was eating too much. She was giving him the same portions as everyone else, perhaps this could explain it?

I did track her diet for 2 wks and then went to a nutritionist. She said there were absolutely NO RED FLAGS..

I had a tendency to be overweight as a child - pretty much from birth really! However, my parents shaped my activities and diet to keep me slim.

GREAT WORK on keeping healthy food choices in the house! Maybe portion is something to look at, and filling her up with raw fruits and veggie snacks in between meals, and with meals. This is something my parents did for me. They also made sure we all got outside to play a lot, walks to the park, and lots of running around chasing. We swam in the summer, and they made a skating rink in our backyard every winter. They were very sneaky about keeping us active!

I was also in dance lessons from the age of 3, and because I loved it, I went 3 days per week by the time I was in grade 2. I think I was a slim and fit kid because my parents sort of shaped my environment to create that for me.

I do believe that some people have a genetic predisposition to being overweight, or heavier, and although it can be fought, it is definitely harder for some rather than others. But, as Dr. Phil says to Oprah, "You are one of those people, but I don't care. You have to do the work." Ugh. :ohwell:

    Good luck!

Yeah some kids are just predisposed to have a little puppy fat. It usually disappears when they get a little older. I'm sure your daughter is healthy and happy.

Good luck from me aswell :flowerforyou:
