I would disagree with anyone that calls adding 5000 steps to your day a disservice. Do a quick search for walking and there are plenty of people that have reached there goals with nothing more than moderated calories and walks.

I only count the exercise if I make a effort to do something active, ie: go on a walk, mow the yard, swim laps etc. I also put the lowest calorie count because I want to be conservative about calories I burn and on the high end for calories I have consumed.

Most importantly I am not trying to limit what I eat, but I must log it. My intent is more to keep the percentages in line. % of carbs, protein and fats. (I am on a low carb diet due to being diabetic and low fat due to heart disease).

So far just in accurately logging what and how much I eat, I am learning portion control and have lost 14 pounds since April, which is about 8% of my body weight, but more importantly for the first time I do NOT feel deprived. If I am hungry I eat. I log it in my journal, and try to exercise 3 times a week. I am losing slowly, but that is okay cause I didnt gain it over night and I want it to stay gone.

Maybe I misread but I thought the OP meant the 5000 steps was daily activity.

Either way, while logging it I guess is nice..is the 50 or 100 calories really worth trying to lot and eat back? Especially considering how most stuff is an estimate anyway? I wouldn't log something as small as that - just doesn't seem worthwhile. But hey to each their own!

...and I'm certain the moderated calories had more to do with their success than the walking did.

To your other point, once again (and I'm sounding like a broken record having to repeat my point), I have nothing against her walking 5000 steps. My point of contention is adding the supposed calorie burn to MFP.

I never said that the act of walking is a disservice.......great for her in finding an activity that she enjoys and has at least started her on the path towards reaching her goals. My point is logging whatever calorie burn her step counter readout says as added activity to MFP is a disservice.
