Fruit and vegetable allergies

Hi. I realize that we should all be eating a good portion of fruits and vegetables in our diet. My question.... I am allergic to raw fruits and vegetables and most fresh, out of the shell, nuts. I don't really care for cooked fruits. the veggies I eat just fine. so, how do I replace the nutrients that are lacking from my lack of fruits/nuts?

A vitamin supplement maybe?0

My boyfriend suffers from very similar allergies to yours, and he's a vegetarian! Talk about a particular diet!
Legumes are critical if you can't have nuts: lentils, beans, peas. If you're an omnivore, then consider lean animal proteins.
The nutrition you would otherwise be getting from fruits should be made up in vegetable servings. Try to get as many vegetables into your diet as possible. Potassium from potatoes, vitamin C from squashes, peppers and broccoli, Vitamin A from carrots...
Check out this chart I've been referencing, and get inventive: http://www.healthalternatives2000.com/vitamins-nutrition-chart.html

Yup pills. They have fruit and veggie vitamins. Can you drink your fruit, like in a smoothie? I wish I were allergic to veggies!0

Is it all fruits and veggies?0

Here is info on some of the important nutriets found in fruits and veggies - I would just make sure that you are selecting a good variety of veggies that covers all your needs. Try not to eat the same veggies all the time. Different colors are good - they usually indicate different nutrients/vitamins, so try to eat a rainbow of veggies every week. Nuts don't necessarily have any key unique nutrients - make sure you're getting adequate protein and healthy fats from other sources (ex - cook with olive oil).

Funny thing is that when you actually become allergic to a food that's when you want it more. My allergy only started when I was about 18. I've founf myself craving a nice juicy apple or a peach, a fig, pomegranate, anything.... It really sucks.0

Are the symptoms of the reaction INSANELY itchy mouth, throat and ears? Plus hives? I'm just curious.0

All raw veggies. I can have maybe 1-2 celery pieces (you know, the little pices for dipping). Most fruits. I seem to be OK with oranges and grapes. and I HATE bananas. with my luck, I'm probably not allergic to them0

No hives (yet). Yes, really itchy throat and you can pretty much feel that it's starting to close up. the ears, yup. I do eat a bite or 2 of something I crave. Just enough so that the itching starts, then I know to stop.0

I wish you could have apples0 -
I have Oral Allergy Syndrome... many different fruits make my lips peel, mouth/tongue itch, etc... It started when I was in my upper teens as well. First it was pineapple, then bananas, avocado, tomato, the list just goes on and on now. I have found that during certain times of the year, the reactions to certain foods are much less - it somehow depends on allergens in the air - ragweed, pollens, etc. The fruits cause some sort of cross-reaction when I eat them if the related allergen is high in the air at the time. It is quite strange but actually fairly common, I've found!
Anyway, I had not had any avocados for probably 3 years and accidentally had a very large bite of a burrito with guacamole a few weeks ago. I was prepared for major irritation in my throat/mouth but then - NOTHING! It must not be bothering me right now... crazy.
Anyway, now that I wrote a novel here on my first post, I'll say that I agree with the others in taking a vitamin and maybe trying to eat more beans/peas.
Good luck to you!0 -
I was told that I have a variety of allergies and one did include the Birch. I just find it odd that it happens in other countries as well. I figured the pollen and pollution are different... oh well, live and learn. I hate not being able to eat apples. they were/are my favorite. I'll sneak a bite every so often. YUMMY!!!!0
