Difference between my friend and I question

Ok, so I have a good friend of mine who is extremely into fitness. He is about 2 years younger than me and his body has very good definition while still being very lean. He comes from a family that is very into health. As for myself I have more muscle mass, and currently am in a martial art class a couple days a week, but am about 30lbs - 40lbs from being super lean like him though I don't look my weight. I come from a family half Russian and half African American so to say the least my blood is more along the lines of retaining fat while having more muscle mass plus my family is more geared towards cooking.

One of the biggest differences between I have noticed in how we keep healthy is our methods. My friends families cooking is comprised of an extremely limited selection food and they are not the biggest on cooking so very bland food. My family on the other hand is very very big on cooking. We have eaten just about every kind of food there is and cook different cultures of food each meal. I myself eat very extremely well emphasizing on low carb, high protein and vegetables with a variety of fruits for my diet.

So while my friend is very motivated and loves the feeling of working out hard with very little interest in cooking beyond what his family does I am the complete opposite. My question was is there anything wrong with this? For some reason a small part of me feels as if I am lacking due to not working out hard like my friend is, but when I head to the gym or try jogging I can't seem to push myself like he can unless I am at my martial arts class.

Sounds like you're bored with the workouts except martial arts. Find workouts that motivate you. You clearly have the eating habits in check, now you need to work on your exercise routine. And yes, you NEED to work on it. Push yourself even when you "don't want to".

Little interest in food may result in low intake, and love of food can make you eat more. Or maybe it's magic.

I personally, would prefer the "selection" in foods, as I don't do bland well. There is nothing wrong with your martial arts, its something you enjoy, therefore sustainable. Keep up the great work!

I don't really understand what you are asking...

What are your goals? What are you trying to achieve? Why are you so worried about what your friend is doing?

Each of us is unique. There's not a thing wrong with the way you feel. I've gone through stages where I eat and work out like your friend. I've also gone through the same thing you are. I hate the phrase "workout routine" because 1) your body adapts and 2) anything only stays interesting for awhile, at least for me!

I also like the Martial arts style workouts, but we don't have that many classes or teachers in our area. So, I did get a DVD set to use at home. That mainly gets me through the winter months. My other obsession is running, although I'm not very fast. You can say my exercise changes with the seasons. I keep trying new things in the hope that I'll find a 3rd obsession and can just rotate between them!

I wouldn't compare! you are you he is him! Apples to oranges. If you are fit, active and healthy I would be happy with that!

Why would you think there is anything wrong with this? You sound healthy, you sound fit, you enjoy your life, you enjoy food. Why would you want to be like someone else? We are all different, enjoy different things, have different abilities, desires and goals.

Don't look or compare yourself with friends or family, or colleagues or anyone else. Is your life the way you want it to be? If the answer is yes, super. If you want something to change, or to live differently because that appeals to you, then make changes, but you seem totally content with your lifestyle. You don't have to defend it, and you especially don't have to measure it against someone else's lifestyle.

Is an accountant more or less happy than an engineer? Is a long distance runner more or less happy than a person who likes to row? Liking what you do is important. Comparing what you do to someone else.... wasted energy. :)
