How much protein?

I've read a lot of mixed things about how much protein one should be getting, without getting too much (which can be harmful for the kidneys). I have reached my goal weight of 175 pounds and am now interested in staying lean and putting on muscle. Depending on my daily exercise level, MFP suggests between 60-90 grams or protein, I usually exceed 110-120. However, I've heard people say to add muscle you need much more, like a gram of protein per pound of body weight - suggesting I need 175+ grams. I want to make sure I am getting enough protein to build muscle, but not damaging my body with too much.
