foot pain! what is this?

I'll be going to a podiatrist, but wonder if anyone has experienced a similar problem.
Last winter and spring I did a lot of downhill skiing, walking (training for 1/2 marathon walk), and hiking.
I started to have a pain on the top of my left foot about 2 inches from the base of my 2nd toe. It wouldn't hurt much while walking/skiing/hiking, but would hurt afterward when I took off my shoes/boots.
It became painful to walk barefoot in my house. I started limping. Went to the doctor who xrayed and said possible stress fracture and to stop walking/hiking. So, I did. I rested it for a long time(8 weeks?). It felt lots better!
Until I went on a walk again. Not a long walk. Maybe 2 miles. After any sustained walking the pain is back.. I rested it again for about another month, finally went on another little bitty walk tonight and it hurts again!!!:grumble:
It has to be going-on-a-walk walking or it's fine. I worked on my feet for twelve hours last Sunday and had no pain. I do jumping and jogging in place in my workouts 6 days a week-- no pain.
What could this BE?????

Do you wear your walking shoes for any of your other activities?0
-
Yes. I wear them for my HIIT workouts and have no trouble with them.
Also, I'm at a healthy weight, so that's not an issue.0 -
Sometimes stress fractures can take long than you'd think (3+ months) to heal, so maybe you weren't feeling pain anymore, but the fracture wasn't fully healed?0

I guess I don't understand why plain old Talking A Walk would be a problem when jumping, jogging in place, and working on my feet all day aren't a problem.
Walks and hikes are two of my very favorite things and I already missed a whole summer of hiking. I thought that would take care of the problem...
I know...I need to get to the podiatrist.0 -

Possibly because when walking, the toes can bend at a tighter angle than they do with the other movements, especially when walking uphill. Do you have Morton's Toe? (2nd toe longer than the first)0 -
Nope. No Morton's toe.
Not flat-footed either and no bunions. I've never had a foot problem until this.0 -
I had Plantar Fasciitus before. Not sure if that is what you have, but I too had foot pain so bad it made me limp. With some stretching and good orthotics the pain has gone away.0
