Strength training basics

I'd like to get started with free weights but really need to start at the beginning such as finding the most effective exercises (5 or so) and learn proper form. This is for getting in shape, not for body building.
Really hoping to find some helpful videos but no luck so far searching Youtube. I'm not in a fitness gym but do have a basic home setup with home gym machine, dumbbells, & barbells (but no squat rack).
Suggestions appreciated.

Read through the A Workout Routine website. It's a good place for general info.

Best starting routine to simply get in shape if you want something simple that doesn't involve a squat rack would be the New Rules of Lifting series of books by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove. Lots of options for home or gym workouts and lots of great info on exercise in general. If you want something more brainless and simple, try P90X.0
