heart rate monitor opinions

I don't own a heart rate monitor yet and am wondering what y'all think and feel about them. I am getting back on track with my food intake and am trying to exercise more regularly. I know not to believe what mfp says I burned and if I'm using a cardio machine that has the capability to tell me how many calories I've burned after putting in my weight I usually decrease the number by 20% before adding to mfp. I would like to get the most accurate results so I want to know if a hrm is worth it. Thanks all. =)
