Jogging Question

Hi guys I am doing this exercise program called hill walking, which basically is climbing a lot of hills at a brisk walk and then jogging down them. I love this exercise it has been fun and very rewarding. But I have a problem……my feet hurt mostly the front of my feet before my toes. I am normally very flat footed so I am trying to run heal to toe but my feet still hurt. Please tell me your secrets.

    Sounds like this type of exercise would be pretty brutal to your toes, what kind of shoes are you using?

    Yeah, I'm with Shannon. Go to a running store where they can recommend the right shoe for you, along with proper arch supports, etc.

    I am using sketchers sports shoes and they ladie in the store said she uses them for jogging on the treadmill.

    It sounds to me like you need better shoes. Running on a treadmill is different than running down a hill. :happy:

    Sketchers are not known for being good for athletics. They aren't even sold in running specialty stores. Check out runnersworld.com and see if you can find one in your area.

    I wear Ryka running shoes and absolutely :heart: them. Coming from someone with severe RA
    rheumatoid arthritis that is saying alot! I tried MANY other brands and found that these provide support, stability and come in the correct wide size.

    Yeah, definitely go to a running store and they will hook you up with proper running shoes. They normally fit you a 1/2 to a 1 size bigger which gives you more wiggle room for your toes.

    It does sound like lots of fun. I'd much rather run down hill than up! lol

    The running store will be your best bet, but they are expensive. You might look for shoes that have a wide sole for better balance and cushion.

    Thank you all very much. I think you guys are right because when I jog I feel like my toes are going to bust out of my shoes, and the pain is probably comming from my toes. Thanks again I am going to get better shoes tonight!

    While we're talking about shoes ... don't forget the importance of wearing the right socks!

    I just got two pairs of SmartWool socks the other day, and I have to say, the ones with light cushion are amazing. You might want to invest in a few good pairs of socks before you even try on shoes. This way you'll be sure to get the best possible fit.

    Great advice gals. I went out that day and bought some new Reebok running shoes. I gave my feet a rest for one day then I took the new shoes out for a ride and it’s been great. All my pain went away in my feet my legs and my back. Oh and I bought them a ½ bigger than I normally wear and they give me lots of room. Can you guys give me some suggestions on socks? Yellow Pepper motioned wool socks, do you mean thick socks?

    I know what you mean. I used to wear Asic's (sp?) and just realized that they were WAY too narrow for me, I bought some Addidas Running shoes and they are so much more comfortable it's not even funny. My feet used to fall asleep on my eliptical, now I can barely tell I am wearing shoes at all.

    No, they're actually thin but have cushioning in all the right places (ball of foot, heel). SmartWool is the name of the brand. Wright socks are also very good. And WigWam is good, too, but not as good as the others. I'm very particular about my running socks. :smile:

    You also might ask the shoe sales person about an insert. I use SuperFeet and they have several different types based upon the shape of your foot and what kind of support you need. Also check on line with sierra trading post and road runner shoes for deals after you know what shoe is best for you!

    I've never been disappointed with Saucony running shoes. I run and walk in them both. I've worn out 4 pair in the last two years. I have a very high arch and they are supportive of that. They also stop my pronating as well. They are a bit pricey, but worth it!
    I was fitted at a running store for these. That's the best advice I've gotten.
