Calories vs Fat

Hello All,

I am new to MFP and have a quick question about my daily nutritional goals. I am wondering if it is more important to hit my goal for Calories or Fat. I definitely don't intend on going over either, but I feel like if I am going to go over on one it is better to go over on fat. Thoughts?

ps. I am not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but I read that there are 3500 calories in 1 pound of fat. That is crazy!

Overall calories is the most important thing. Your macro nutrients (fat/carbs/protein) are acceptable with a pretty wide range. MFP defaults at 55% carbs, 15% protein and 30% fat, but generally healthy ranges are 45-60% carbs, 15-30% protein and 20-30% fat. So it's okay if you're over/under some on the individual categories - it's your overall calories that count the most.

I think they go hand in hand, less calories= less fat, not for sure though.

Everything I read says calories in calories out. The breakdown is not as important in the beginning. Once you start eating better and more consistently then you can lower the carbs and up the protein as you need to for muscle recovery after exercise. The only fat you need to avoid like the plague is TRANS FATS. Poly or mono-saturated fats are "good" fats. Don't worry too much at the start. Work on smaller portions and switching to eating 4 times and then 5 times a day(every 2.5 to 3 hrs.) and you'll see the weight start dropping off. Bing search for "Diet Buddy" (free program for your 'puter) it has beginner calastenics/ resistance training to get you started burning calories. Good luck and God Bless.

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I really appreciate it! You confirmed my train of thought.

Like you all said, I am keeping my goals small and working on it day by day. I will probably be asking more questions as the days go on.

    Thank you again!
