Hello, recently the only time i have to workout is early in the morning which is a problem for me. I can't seem to find the motivation to get up and workout! does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions???

  • I'm right there with you! I find myself hitting the snooze then running around trying to get myself and my daughter out the door on time in the mornings. I have found a way around this, though. What you cook and how you prepare it can really give you some time. Use the oven or crockpot more and you'll have that "cook time" to work out. Then you can do some longer sessions during the weekend when you have more time. Not sure if it will work for your situation, but it's helped me!

I know how you feel. Mornings are difficult for me, too! I start working later in the day and get home late at night so mornings suck for me. What works for me is to start stretching in bed the second you open your eyes. Do some deep breathing. It really helps get me out of bed and feel better by the time I have my cup of tea. Usually by then, I feel like I can exercise. Hope this helps. I look forward to see other suggestions. I need them, too!

During the summer I switched to getting up an hour earlier to get my runs/walks in. I've never before been a morning person. The hardest thing is getting out of bed. Once your feet touch the floor the hard part is done. I love getting a workout done first thing. You don't have to worry about getting it in later and/or being distracted and not getting it in. You think that you'll be tired later on in the day but it gives you energy and I no longer got tired in the afternoons at work. It's worth it you just to get your feet on the ground and get your 'glute' out of bed after the alarm goes off. Good luck!!

If mornings were my only time to work out then there's no way that I would ever be able to get it in! I am so not a morning person!
  • I am the same. I tried training at 6 am before coming home and getting ready for work. I made it one time only . I train after supper around 6 pm. I have zero energy in the morning for lifting weights ....

I am not a morning person either! I have two kids and tried to workout during their naptime, but found that I was too tired and always came up with an excuse to skip. I worked out 3 days/wk and wanted to work out 5. Now I get up with my husband at 6:45 every morning, get his lunch together to help wake me up and start getting ready to workout. I start around 8 after I make sure the kids are occupied. I do not feel tired in the morning and it is wonderful having it out of the way! It is easier for me to get out of bed when I hear my husband's alarm and he gets up too! If you're not married, maybe have a friend or relative who is going to work call you in the morning to make sure you get up.

I don't do first thing in the morning workouts. I've been up for an hour and a half and I'm just now *considering* doing it ... soon.

Previously, when I had somewhere to be at 8 a.m. and had to leave by 7 or some such... workouts would have to happen at night. Which is fine by me. Do it when the kids are doing their hw & chores or a little while after dinner during their free time/shower time... whatever. I'll even work out at 10 p.m. May not be much of one, but I'll do it.

Right now, Grad school leaves me lots of flexibility at to when I get to work out - but that's not going to last forever and I will again be working out at night.
  • I agree. I have conversations with my family in the morning that I don't remember later in the day because I was practically sleep walking! :) I found that, if I planned to get up in the morning and exercise, then slept in, I set myself up for disappointment. So I've given in to that extra 30 minutes of time in bed in the morning, but I plan accordingly the night before:

    1. Pack my lunch, lay out clothes, and make sure my bag(s) are packed for whatever I need at the office the next day.
    2. I make sure I know what I'm cooking for dinner the next night and try to prep as much of it as I can. I grocery shop on the weekends, and if I have time, I'll prep for the whole week on Sunday afternoon.
    3. PUT IT IN YOUR CALENDAR THAT YOU'LL WORK OUT!!!! I found myself saying it was more important to work at the office an hour later, rather than exercising, simply so I wouldn't have to do it. Write it down and make yourself accountable.

So essentially, I try to plan at least 1 day ahead as much as I can, to free up as much time as possible for exercising when I'm most alert and awake, which is early evenings.

    Good luck!
  • I have the same problem! I want to work out in the mornings b/c that's the best time for me since working out in the evenings keeps me up too late. I will try the suggestions & see if it works for me. Thanks!
  • i dont have this problem (wheeee~ i'm that annoying morning person who is way too happy when she wakes up) but i have friends that do and i know some things that have helped them. set your alarm an hour (or more) before you set it now. that way you still have time to hit the snooze three or four times and ALSO get a workout in and not have to rush to get out the door. and while i know this isnt what anyone wants to hear......go to bed earlier. the more sleep you get the more you'll feel refreshed when you get up in the morning and not like "auuuuuugh but i JUST got to sleep anywayyyyy!" (i HAVE felt that. oh college and your all night paper writing >_<) though be sure not to get TOO MUCH sleep either, that can make you feel just as sluggish, 8-9 hours is about what a person should be getting, and thats SOLID rem sleep, not fitful crap sleep. i hope this helps and i hope you can manage to fit those workouts in! good luck!

this! this always works for me, if its in the calendar you HAVE to do it!

I'm not a morning person either but when I was working out I found that mornings, though hard to get started doing, actually worked out great. I'm a working mom of 2 girls and had one in school at the time. I would get up 30 mins before she did and do the 30 day shred workout and if I had time 10-15 minutes on our elliptical machine. It was hard the first few days-week but I made myself go to bed earlier and once I did the workout I felt great and it lasted all day. I didn't get tired in the afternoons like I normally do. I would also do time on the elliptical several nights a week in front of the TV (couldn't miss my shows but also couldn't use that as an excuse) I did this everyday for nearly a month (at the end of my last weight loss efforts) before we went on vacation and I got off track and never got back on but I re-started my efforts yesterday and hope to start getting to bed earlier and get back to my morning workouts. DanOhh is right the hardest part is getting out of bed but you just have to be committed to wanting to lose the weight and get healthy so that you can push yourself through that part. Once your up get started and before you know it you'll be done. That's what I liked about the 30 day shred, it's a 20 minute workout (with a warm up and cool down/stretching) so I'd just tell myself I only have to make it 20 minutes. I can do 20 minutes. It gets easier each day and the energy you have the rest of the day makes it worth it. If I was up late the night before or accidentally slept in then I would make time after dinner or before bed to get my workout in but it was sort of a punishment for me because I don't like working out in front of my husband/kids but that's what I had to do for not getting up in the morning because I couldn't miss a day of the Shred. Good luck, you can do it, you just have to set your mind to it and get rid of the "I can't do it because I'm not a morning person" thoughts in your head. They are just excuses trying to hold you back from what you are totally capable of doing!
