Running in place: is it effective?

It looks like a lot of these exercise video games require you to run in place.
Anyone here run in place for an exercise? Does it seem to work? Is it easy to do for minutes at a time?
Thanks

I am a member of Curves. I run in place every other 30 seconds. I am seeing results.
My sister is also a member and she has been doing the Curves circuit and running in place every other 30 seconds for the last year. After only 6 months she had lost 25 lbs. (Curves curcuit is with several different machines, 30 seconds on machine, 30 running in place)0 -
I usually use it to warm up my legs, but it is very effective because it works those leg muscles.0
