Does anyone know exactly how this works? Like How many extra calories can be burned due to the presence of muscle mass(during resting periods), and so on, I am slightly lost on the whole subject.

The only real variables in determining a persons daily metabolic requirements are Fat Free Mass and activity level. As an example a 150 lb female with 35% body fat, and light activty, would need approximately 1865 calories/day before exercise for maintenance.

A 150 lb. female with 25% body fat would need approximately 2153 calories/day before exercise for maintenance. The only difference in these examples is Fat Free Mass( the % of body weight that is not fat).

There is a formula for figuring this if you know your % body fat. As you can see, muscle mass can make a substantial difference in you caloric requirements. That is why it is so important to not to restrict calories too drastically, or lose weight too quickly. Maintaining muscle while losing fat will help to keep your metabolic fires burning hot.
