I've never tried it but I'm ready to expand my horizons.
So many people I know love it! I'm a bit nervous about trying it- I don't want to eat raw fish so that is totally out but I know there are other options out there.
Any advice on what to try as a beginner? lol Would love to hear from all of you about what I should order / find... I've even heard that Grocery stores have good Sushi!

Well, "sushi" pretty much MEANS raw fish... but for starting out I'd look at California rolls, Spider rolls (generally containing soft-boiled crab but ask) and Shrimp Tempura rolls (cooked + battered shrimp.)0 -
OMG...try the squid salad!! yum yum yum....0

I thought there was some out there that isn't raw? I like Crab so I will have to try the callifornia rolls.0 -
Sushi is SOOO GOOD!!!!! I was skeptic at first too. My first roll was a deep fried one with cream cheese, shrimp, and spicy crab. AMAZING but doesn't fit into this dieting lifestyle so well. I would suggest shrimp or crab ones since you are nervous about the raw fish thing. As for the more healthy choices, stay away from the ones with cream cheese.0

I love sushi!! All kinds, but I stick with sashimi because it is full of protein, no carbs and packed with vitamins and low calories! A winner. I like white fish (hamachi), tuna, and salmon the best.
I also love edamame and seaweed salad. Delicious! I actually had all of that for lunch today, a HUGE portion and approximately 350 calories for everything!0 -
Most sushi isn't actually raw. It's steam cooked. Stay away from nigri to start out with because that's large pieces of raw fish on rice beds (delicious but kind of scary to beginners). If you go to a restaurant just ask them which ones have cooked fish in them and they can help you out. Also, if you know you like a certain kind of fish (like salmon or tuna) try a roll that includes that first.0

Mmmmm sushi!
Most restaurants have notations on the menu that say if its raw or not. Anything with crab stick in it is not raw. A lot of the salmon items are smoked, not raw. Down here in Louisiana you can get a crawfish roll that is not raw. Not sure if that's available elsewhere as well. They're yummy.
My advice is try a restaurant, pick the not raw items and ask for advice from your server.
Watch out for any "crunchy" items (read "crunchy" as "fried") and any of the the thicker mayo sauces as these are higher calorie.
Also, drink a ton of water, as sushi itself (not mentioning the soy sauce) is high in sodium.0 -
As a general rule ....i don't eat seafood...no real reason, just don't prefer it. Anyways I LOVE california rolls, especially with the spicy sauce (which isn't exactly healthy since it is mayo based) but they are fully cooked and delicious.
Edamame is another favorite at the sushi bar, I don't do the raw stuff so I don't have a suggestion for that, sorry.
I say go for it!!0 -

Shrimp tempura rolls, while AMAZING, are really really not good for ya! Usually very high in calories!!0 -
Sushi actually means vinegar rice and there are so many really great options! For veggies I like avocado, cucumber, or veggie rolls. As far as cooked rolls, try smoked salmon or BBQ eel. Some places might even be able to make these with brown rice. Watch out for anything crispy, tempura, fried or covered with thick rich sauces.
Once you start loving sushi you can get pieces of fish plain, no rice rolls, which is probably the healthiest! My all time favorite is tuna tataki, which is just seared around the edges. So good!!
I'd also recommend some appetizers, like miso soup or edamame.0 -
I love SUSHI! But be careful some rolls are high in calories esp Philly roll because of the cream cheese.0

Sushi means rice (or vinegar rice) wrapped in seaweed. A lot of sushi is not completely raw most sashimi is. Sashimi is a Japanese dish consisting of raw fish! There are plenty of sush rolls out there that are very yummy and don't taste like fish at all
Like others have stated watch which rolls you get lots of rolls have sauces that are mayo based or contain things such as cream cheese which are higher in fats. All in all I love sushi and edamame0 -
As a vegan, I enjoy sushi regularly and I don't eat any fish at all!
Most restaurants have a delicious variety of vegetarian rolls to choose from. Avocado rolls are a mainstay of course. Miso soup is very mild and really tasty- it's made from soy bean paste and usually has a bit of tofu and seaweed mixed in. Edamame is steamed soybean pods with a bit of salt, very very healthy.
Avoid the tempura because it means DEEP FRIED.0 -
Oh my goodness! Sushi is my favorite!!! Had some the other night on our wedding anniversary. I'd start out with some simple cooked rolls. Like someone said California rolls are great and will have you hooked. I used to think I'd never try any of the raw but now all I want is the raw. I want nigiri or sashimi only. I have learned that that is the absolute BEST way to enjoy fish!0

For a beginner I would say california roll or wrap. super yum. fully cooked. Little more adventurous? try a combo pack. Usually mine are a mix of raw tuna rolls, raw salmon rolls, and cooked BBQ eel rolls. also super yum. Tuna hand wraps are my fave. Save the squid salad for later, it is ....interesting. Good luck, happy sushi hunting.0

Wow thanks so much for all of the responses!! I can't wait to try!0

My favorite are avacado maki rolls...basically any veggie maki roll will be a good start...i don't like the raw fish either...for me it's not the thought of raw fish, it's just to meaty for me...if that makes sense...i love the rolls...any kind of roll lol but be careful the imitation crab rolls are higher in calories than the veggie rolls...I had tons for lunch yesterday and the rest for supper tonight...so damn good!0

I was skeptical about trying sushi at first also. As a beginner, I tried the california rolls, but then I loved the crunch roll a lot better than the california rolls. The crunch roll is exactly like a california roll except it has a piece of tempura shrimp in the center and is served with eel sauce (YUM!). There is also some tempura sprinkled on top of the roll. When you try sushi, don't think about what it is you are eating... simply focus on the flavor and savor it. My advice, don't set yourself up to not like it.0
