BMI Question

Ok so most all my life everything has said my BMI is to high. The problem I have is I was blessed(unfortunately)with a very large chest. So when my weight is used for BMI it says I am severly obese, however I know this is incorrect. I am 5'4" and I weigh 175 however I also have a F cup. How do I figure out what is a healthy weight because the BMI says I should weigh 120 if I remember correctly and Im sorry if I weighed 120 I would be way out of proportion.

I would suggest getting a body fat measurement. Someone who is trained properly at a gym could do it with calipers. I'm sure your doctor would be able to give you an accurate measurement.0

Thank you I had thought about the gym. As for a doctor that won't do any good, I don't have one as I have no insurance.0

You can check your own body fat with either calipers or even with certain measurements. I use a simple online calculator that uses just my weight, waist measurement, sex, and age. It may not be entirely accurate, but it is a good way to see if you are having success.
Also, I do not trust BMI measurements at all for the reason you listed. Bodybuilders thick with lean muscle can test obese on BMI scales when they clearly are not obese.0 -
We have almost the exact same stats. I am 5'4 and recently bought a size H bra (was measured for it, so thats the right size for me!)
While I agree with you that 120 pounds is way to skinny for my body type at least, I want to get down to 135 - 140ish. That is within the healthy BMI range and, in my mind at least, an achievable goal. I weighed in the 130's when I was in my early 20's and it looked good. I looked healthy and in shape. I was 187 when I started on MFP, so that is a pretty substantial amount of weight to lose!
One thing to consider is, if you are at all like me, I have always wanted breast reduction surgery. I am hoping that by losing weight I will be able to get my boobs "chopped off" and look really good! I am all boobs now, so it will be good to be able to buy shirts without having to worry about the girls!
Good luck with figuring out your goal! You can always set a mini-goal and then re-evaluate depending on how you feel and look at that stage!0 -
I want a reduction but I also want children and in my family it is common that even with a reduction they will come back.0
