How important is a "rest" day?

I started the C25K program on Sunday. I do hot yoga on Mondays (I went tonight) and Thursdays. Should I take tomorrow off from the C25K program since I didn't rest today? I love my yoga and don't want to miss my classes! How does this work out schedule look?

Sunday: C25K
Monday: hot yoga
Tuesday: rest
Wed: C25k
Thursday: hot yoga (I could cut this out I gess)
Friday: C25K
Sat: rest

I feel so beat today! I don't want to over do it but I really want to do hot yoga AND the C25K. Maybe I will only do the C25K 2 days a week and streach each weeks workout into 2 weeks. Any suggestions would be great!

Don't overdo it, but the schedule you posted up doesn't look bad.

Okay well heres my Schedule it might help you get a better idea.

    Monday: C25K
Tuesday: Wii Fit: 20 minutes step and 45 minutes strength/toning
    Wednesday: C25K
Thursday: Wii Fit: 20 minutes step and 45 minutes strength/toning
    Friday: C25K
Saturday: Wii Fit: 20 minutes step and 45 minutes strength/tonight
Sunday: Wii Fit: 30 minutes step and other small cardio exercises (Kung Fu, Rhythm Boxing, Hula Hoop)

I consider Sunday a kind of rest day because I don't really push myself, But I really like to stay active then I don't fall into the point where I don't feel like working out. But thats just to help me stay motivated.

Your body really does need a day of total rest in order for it to recover and repair the damage you've done (and yes, damage can be good, but little muscle tears that build more muscle still need to rebuild). That doesn't mean laying around in bed, but it does mean not purposely exercising.

Totally agree. I started running 11 months ago with 3% of the knowledge I have today about running/exercise/healthy weightloss. Rest days are important when you are building up a mileage base or weight/resistance training. Now I run every day because I know what works for me. I'm more aware of what is normal (good) pain and overdoing it. Listen to your body, stretch before and after and soak those sore muscles in a hot bath. Don't forget the protein powder drink within 30 minutes after workout for the muscle repair. It saves me a lot of soreness when I kick it up a notch.

For now I'm just working on burning fat but, once I reach 18% BF I'll switch to marathon training on a four day per week cycle and mix in weight training. BTW I run first thing every day(fasted cardio) because it burns fat the best. 2 -3 pounds per week and I eat ALL my exercise calories back. When I run later in the day or less days per week, my weight doesn't go up or down.

Having the right shoes is a must. They also have a mileage limit of 350 - 450 miles. They won't look worn out but trust me they are. Running shoe specialty stores have the ability to test you( with a video of you on the treadmill) to see what shoes you need. I found one online where if you send them a video of yourself they will analyze it for free and give recommendations. They also have a video for you to compare against. I'm a "natural" runner. Some people who are overweight turn their foot over(pronate) and should have a different shoe than mine that has support that corrects that.

The workout you posted isnt bad at all. You have 2 days rest in there.
Its actually very similar to what I have planned for my marathon training 4 days of running, 2 days hot yoga, 1 day rest.

Funnily enough that's what some bodybuilders do. They sleep afterwards to allow the muscles to repair or so I read awhile back.
  • Great, thanks everyone!!!
