How to determine weight goals?

Hi everyone! I was just wondering how you decided what was your goal weight and at what point you would stop trying to lose weight. I am a few pounds from 150 and that was my "original" long term goal. I am short (only 5'1'') but everyone keeps saying I look great and don't need to lose any more. I wear size small tops and size 4-6 pants depending on the brand. Technically for my height I should weigh 98-135lbs according to the "chart." I'd like to shoot for 140 once I get down to 150.

Do you decide your goals based on the chart, or how did you determine your goal weight?

I used the chart. My "ideal" weight is 130lbs, so I decided to go with that. When I graduated high school I weighted 125lbs, and remember all the comments I'd receive about being too small, and I think that's just too low for me at this point. I think I can hit 130lbs and be happy, especially since I'm loving exercise now.

Also, this way if I happen to not get quite down to 130lbs or end up gaining a couple back, I won't be too discouraged since it will still be a healthy weight.

I'm 5' 7" and 193 currently...my goal weight is 140lbs for now... but I may try to get down to 135. When I get to 150 lbs I'm in a size 8 pant and am quite comfortable in my skin. However, the swimsuit is what ultimately decided my number. I look GREAT for me (not chizzled and still have some meat on my bones and am curvy) at 140.
  • cHART? Where is it? I wanna know:tongue:

There are lots for "ideal" weight based on height. I used this one: http://www.self.com/calculatorsprograms/calculators/idealweight

Not sure how accurate they are though but I guess all charts are pretty close in range.

I hate the chart :-p I found out my body fat % and subtracted all but 10% of my pounds of fat to come up with my goal weight,

I honestly don't have an actual goal, I think I will just know when I am happy :)
  • I'm 5'4" and have a goal weight of 140lbs. I got down to 151lbs when I was 21 and felt confident and happy so 140lbs should do it! But if I end up between 130lb and 135lbs, I'll still be pretty healthy for my height so we'll see how it goes :)

Im 5ft 4 and going for 10st 4 - 144 pounds. I look skinny at that weight, and love all the pics of me at that weight.

That only *just* puts me at in the healthy BMI range, at 24.9 i think, - but I know its a really good and slim weight for me, i think im kinda heavy boned tbh too - as I have weighed less than that and looked too skinny.

BMI etc are just guides - so go with what feels right for you
  • Thanks for the tips! I think I will just go with whatever feels right! Seems like the correct way to do it. Hopefully another 10-15lbs and I will be there!!

I calculated my BMI and picked something that was in the middle of the "normal range" When I get to that goal and still feel like I need some more work then I'll lower my goal accordingly.
