Love the tools this site offers and would love some other Type 1 Diabetics to share challenges and success with. I plan on staying the weight I am now so no loss goals...But I will have maintain goals. Plus I want to make sure my eating is as healthy as possible so I don't have all the complications. I was diagnosed Dec 7th, 2010 at the age of 46. Quite a shocker. Really looking for others to connect with who want to live as healthy as they can as well.

Welcome to MFP and the Type 1 club!!
Counting carbs sucks at first because your learning everything. Since most people eat the same foods over and over it will become 2nd nature. I'm 27 and was diagnosed at 12 13 days before my 13th birthday. If you ask my Dr. she will say I'm her best patient because I know that I need to keep up on things because I don't want any other health issues like my mom.
I suggest joining Diabetes Forums if you haven't already. There are a few foods that you won't be able to get right ever, like pizza, Thai food, and Chinese.
A word of advice when your feeling that it totally sucks being diabetic. "It can always be worse. All you have to do is check your blood sugar, take your insulin, count carbs, eat healthy." "Diabetes is the most manageable thing you can have its not like cancer or something." (self-quoted)0 -
The only carb challenge I have had was a surprise to me - after joining and setting my calorie goal, I found my carbs went up (averaging probably 125-150g/day now, where before I tried to keep it 75-100g).
It's not a problem, though - once you get to know your insulin to carb ratios (mine can change depending on the time of day) flexibility is easier (though I think that more carbs=more room for problems, kind of an Occam's Razor thing).
Oh yeah, and like amccrazgrl mentioned, there will be certain foods that will screw up things no matter what. For me, it's white carbs - rice, potatoes, thicker pizza crust, etc. and also carbs with a higher fat content (the fat helps the carbs work extra long and forceful for me).0 -
Thanks guys...I will be learning from all these things...Still learning what is the right amount for any given meal...although last weeks Blood Glucose avaerage was 124 and this week so far is right on track to be the same. I want to be poster child blood glucose where I can control it. And poster child correction where the high was not under my control...if that makes any sense:) Add to that my goal to not gain or lose wieght. As I have learned more about Carbs I have actually taken in less calories. I think the Dr would like to see me gain like 5 or 10 lbs....I would be okay with 5 of those....but have to get a few more calories to match activity and Carbs:) Actually have about two lows a week when I just can't think of more Carbs to eat for a mael. Will cut one unit of insulin to make up for not eating the carbs...I understand that will help with the Lows. The Pizza joint here in Dayton (Marions) has a nine inch personal pizza that I ask them to just smear a dab of sauce on the Very very thin crust...then they add the cheese Again very very little sauce... Thiers is high sugar sauce so again they just smear it and scrape off the eccess...the cheese onion, green peppers and banana peppers. 7 units of insulin and 120 reading 2 hours later.....I am sure that is the only one I will be able to do that with but hey...it works:)0
