I have never been a fan of milk and only use it in cooking. I had never thought of trying a milk substitute because I just assumed I would not like it. I bought a container of Vanilla flavored Almond Milk so I could try this almond smoothie recipe and I loved the almond milk!!! I know there are a lot of options out there so...what other milk substitues should I try? What ones are the best for you? My daughter also hates milk, but this stuff tastes like a shake!

Vanilla almond milk is by far the tastiest substitute, unsweetened vanilla almond milk it good too and only 40 cals/serving. You can try goats milk, soy milk (vanilla is pretty good) both of these subs are high in protein. there is hemp milk, rice milk, and come in many flavors, although I do not like rice milk at all.

The protein levels in rice, hemp, and almond milk is very low so be aware of that, I don't consider them substitutes for this reason, I use them in addition to regular milk, or even mix them 50/50.

My favourite substitute for milk is Silk soy milk. I find it less sweet than some brands, plus it stirs into coffee really nicely (some other milk substitutes don't mix correctly).
  • The Silk Chocolate, to me taste like a yoohoo...I love it. It's not real low in calories so I have to watch it. I did try the lite vanilla...I didn't like it. Thanks for the info on the Almond Milk...I am definately going to have to try it

i'm vegan and i have to say...almond milk is the best! I'm somewhat allergic to soy so i avoid it when i can. Almond milk (plain unsweetened), while tasteless, works wonderfully in cooking recipes or cereal (esp. if the cereal's already sweeted or it's granola..) and it's only 40 cal. a serving. by far the lowest calorie non-dairy milk.

I agree w/this! Anyone who drinks Soy milk needs to switch to it. It has a thicker feel to it, that's more like cream. <thumbs up>

I recently switched from almond to coconut milk. Makes my protein shakes so much thicker.

I'd like to try Almond milk. Is it sold with the other milk?
  • My daughter absolutely loves vanilla almond milk. Almond Breeze is the one I buy. She really loves how it makes her cereal taste, especially cocoa pebbles.
At our grocery store, it's in the organic/health food area.

Good! the only thing is that there is not alot of protein in it. But if you were not drinking it at all....bravo!!

I love almond milk too :) I use it in my protein shakes so I don't mind that it doesn't contain a lot of protein ! Try it with protein powders you will LOVE it.

Thanks for all of the great info. Yes it is very thick, so if you are looking for a "milk" texture-this is not it. I found the almond milk at Walmart with the regular milk, soy milk... I will have to try soy milk too.
  • I keep meaning to try Almond milk. I drink silk soy milk and just started drinking the lite silk chocolate soy milk as well. I love them. But I will have to try the almond milk sometime!

I love Almond milk!! Either Blue Diamond unsweetened (40 cals) or Silk unsweetened are awesome!

Another good one to try is Coconut milk. If you get the So Delicious unsweetened version it is 50 calories.

Also wanted to add that you can buy them either in the natural foods section (the unrefrigerated kind) or in the refrigerated case w/ the soymilks usually. HTH!

In my local grocery store it's in two places: the baking isle and the healthy isle. I've seen it in ceral isles in some other areas.

When in doubt, just ask directions.
