Hey all you gals out there! I need some help! I started taking BC when I got married 8 months ago and even though the Dr. said I should not gain weight on the pill...I HAVE! My husband suggested that it's water weight because I am working out hard and counting my calories here on MFP. I am typically under my cal goal everyday and I am not seeing ANY results! My flab on my stomach, butt, hips, and thighs is not budging! Any ideas on how to get this water off if that's what it is???

The average weight gain on BCP is 5 lbs. I've been on about a dozen types and they are all similar.

Do you eat the same amount of calories each day? Try a high day or adding a bit. Could be you are exercising more and not eating enough- which will cause a stall. When you first begin exercising, your muscles will pull in extra water.

Most plateaus only last 2 weeks, keep going

What pill are you on? I retain water naturally and I am on YAZ because that pill has a slight diuretic in it and balances out any water weight gain. I thijnk in some ways- being on the pill has made me slimmer. That is 100% not the case when I was on Orho Tri-Lo. Major weight gain on that one. I think it all depends on your body but if you ask your doctor they can tell you.

I gained about 4 pounds when I went on it... but it all went to my two girlfriends up top... any chance you're gaining in on the scale but not in a bad way on your body?
  • Yea I am on YAZ also and I have gained about 10 lbs. The Doc also said it would clear up my acne but it did not do that either. And when it comes to my calories...Ive only been tracking them AGAIN for a short time...(was doing it previously) I am not as consistant as i should be i guess because some days I work out harder than others and I get SOOO hungry that I eat into my exercise cals. But I have started exercise harder so yea the water being pulled in could be negating the exercise. Thanks for the info!
  • gained all over...my girls got bigger too. the thing is I am not gaining or losing right now...my body just refuses to change!

O my. This is an issue I've been fighting for over the past two years myself. Trying this and that. Depo (shot) started it all ... Gained over 15 lbs in a course of a year ...

Best advice, even when it gets tough, just find something that keeps you motivated. Keep talking and trying things with your doctor. For me I had to go off it a little bit and now I'm still testing certain ones.

    Watch your sodium/salt intake.

I have heard the IUDs are best when it comes to no weight gain, but I haven't tried that yet.

One thing I do like about BC - I don't look like a man in a bikini anymore! hahaha

How long have you been taking it?

I am on birth control and have been on and off various types for years. I'd rather be heavy than pregnant! Every time I got off my birth control I immediately slimmed back down. That only lasted a short while because I would also get pregnant. Three kids and 30 lbs later, my husband is getting fixed. The surgery is scheduled for Friday and soon I can be free from birth control! I you guys are looking forward to having kids, they sell an implant thing your doctor puts in with no hormones. I think it is supposed to last about 5 years and it can be removed at any time. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.

Just to add- Yaz is particularly bad for water retention at times
  • crap lol been on it for well 5 or 6 months...had tried something else and it was not the right one for me...Dont like the idea of IUD's either...have seen in person when it pokes through and gets into the abd cavity...not cool. but thanks for all the help and ideas! I will just keep going and yes watch my sodium!

Don't get down just yet. Everyone's bodies are different when it comes to food, cycles, etc. Sometimes you have to give it more than 3 months like they state . . .

I'm on my third different kind, second pill (in two years) and this one doesn't seem to be so bad, but again, it's not going to happen for me over night. So i just keep tracking any progress and my food and report to my doctor every once in awhile. -She finally listened to be after the third time I was in there and no weight loss. Ya think??

I went up about six pounds after starting the pill three months ago. I've since lost three of those pounds (it was water weight) by adding fibre to my diet and drinking lots of water.

I believe that the rest of the weight I gained is fat- because I had perpetual 'PMS' for a while as my body adjusted to the hormones, and snacked like crazy. My own fault. :)

When I was on the pill before (a few years ago) I was able to maintain a healthy weight. It can have SOME effect, but as long as you keep exercising and tracking what you eat, you should be okay. If you're doing both and STILL gaining, I'd talk to your doctor.
