calories burned from fitness DVDs

I have increased my workouts from 3 days a week to 5 days trying to get the weight loss started again. Most days I go to the gym, but sometimes I just can't make it there and do fitness DVD's at home. I have kind of gotten hooked on the cardio machines at the gym telling me how many calories I burned. They ask for my weight and age, so I feel like they are fairly accurate.

Is there a way to tell (without spending $$ for a heart rate monitor) how many calories I burn doing cardio DVD's at home? I own the 30 day shred, but have also done some others, as our local video store does free rentals on all fitness DVD's. So far I've also done the Method Pilates fusion, the 1 mile walk at home, and some of the "of steel" videos (buns of steel, arms of steel, etc).

Thanks for everything you guys do...I can always count on you for support and encouragement!!!

No everybody's different, you can only get an estimate by logging in on the exercise list sometimes its hundreds of calories due to the fact we all burn differently

A HRM is your best tool. I got one for christmas and I LOVE IT. So far I assess all the different excerises to see what excerise really burned the cals. So far I found that 27 mins walk/ jog on threadmill burned 200 cals. Doing "walk away the pounds 3 mile" burn me 234 in 43 min. Now I weight 193 pounds and 5 "7. Workout videos are good as well. You can bump it up using hands weights and push it hard to max your burn.

i know its an investment, but a heart rate monitor is SO worth it, i promise you! The machines i found out were giving me a extra hundred calories that i didnt burn! and i got a ft7 by polar from amazon for around seventy bucks, and they have the bill me later so i have 90 days to pay it off interest free! Just a suggestion! :)

I definitely agree with purchasing a heart rate monitor. Polar has many different models, some are even as cheap as 35 dollars. I am a college athlete and use mine for every workout I do. I actually feel weird when I don't have it on! The watches can be programmed with your height, weight, and age and keep a running log of your heart rate. This is significantly more accurate than a treadmill or elliptical's generalization. Plus, you can keep track of your calories in all of your activities! I have even worn mine around for full days before just to see how many calories I actually burn throughout a day with my normal activities.

    Good luck with your workouts!
  • I used my HRM and it calculated wrong:( I did the Jiallian Micheals 6 weeeks to 6 pack and it estimated my burn at 37 calories in 35 minutes....I don't think so!!! And then I tested it on my treadmill to see the difference in calories on my HRT and the programming I did on my fitness journal and it too was way off...I must be doing something wrong because it wasn't cheap...at 45.00.

The OP said she didn't want to buy a HRM. I realize that the calories burned will be different for each individual, but I agree with the OP. I'd like to have an estimate on how many calories different DVD's burn without buying a HRM. I just can't afford one right now.
