Vegetarians: How do you fuel up pre and post workout?

With all the talk amongst everything dealing with carbs and protein, and being vegetarian, what's the best foods to eat before and after excercise?
I want to have crazy energy BEFORE and during my workout, so lately I eat a smaller portion of oatmeal with soymilk and a little real maple syrup. I figure that first my body gets super quick energy from the syrup, but then the complex carbs in the oatmeal and bit of protein may kick in to KEEP my energy up. I had a great workout today! After my workout, I down 1 cup of soymilk with life time protein powder (chia, hemp and pea).
Is this a good game plan? Is it best to mostly load up on complex carbs 30 min prior to working out, and loading up on protein afterwards? Last time I was working out regularly, I didn't care much about nutrition, and I wasn't vegetarian

something small like even some cereal or some fruit. i personally eat my lunch, then wait about an hour, work out,and then drink a bunch of water and a smoothie, or have a small snack. i get enough protein throughout the day, but i eat breakfast, snack, workout, lunch, snack and then dinner. then another snack if you want to look at my diary go ahead. feel free to friend me.0

Being a vegetarian, I always have carbs, but make sure to eat something with protein before working out. I don't have a post workout meal. Depending on the time of day, I don't eat again until lunch, dinner, etc. (Maybe a small snack-just depends!)0
