I finally got a protein powder to, well it's supposed to be a meal replacement but for now I'm using the smaller portion to use as an after workout snack. I got the Jillian Micheals Whey Protein Vanilla creme shake.
My question is this: i made it for the first time last night using water and it was not bad but not great either. Should i be using milk? it would be fat free milk. What about a almond milk? (i drink the vanilla almond milk).
Any suggestions?

I think it all depends. If you're trying to lose weight, water is what most people suggest. If you're trying to gain or do a meal replacement, I believe they say milk and peanut butter.
Only suggest I have is to put it in a blender with ice and maybe add some fruits.0 -
For the longest time I only used milk b/c I thought water was gross with whey protein.
In reality, it’s more so how you mix it. If you shake/stir it will never be good, you have to blend.
I blend 1 scoop chocolate whey protein, ½ cup skim milk, 2/3 cup water, ¾ cup ice and ½ frozen banana (peel and slice when ripe then freeze – you can keep these forever so I highly recommend stocking up). The banana gives it the smooth whipped texture like a milkshake and the taste is not watered down by reducing the milk. I have this daily for breakfast and I highly recommend it. It’s a giant shake for <250 calories.0 -
I was told if you use milk it;s to help build up muscle. Body builders use the protien powder with milk. For losing weight use water. If it's really bad you can use the skimmilk but I don't think you'll get the best results. After a while you'll get used to it though. I know I have. LOL Good luck!0

I've used whey in a number of different ways. Definitely in milk, but I also add other things as needed. If I need more carbs I add banana. If I need fats I add natural peanut butter. If I need a whole meal replacement I might add both, and then the thing tastes like a glass of pure happyness (banana pb milkshake, anyone?).
In the end, just make it part of your intake goals. You don't have to be a bodybuilder to use protein.0 -
I will normally use water and half a frozen banana. I don't like just plain water, and adding a banana definately thickens it up and adds sweetness/texture that I like.0

I use reflex micro whey (Chocolate) .. and its pretty good with water
milk gives most people a bloated stomach.. so uif you go with milk always go with skimmed milk
and most meal replacements have 10-30 grams of carbs.. mine only has 0.6 grams per serving
if you looking to cut back.. go with some thing that has not more than 3 grams per serving.. i wont really call them meal replacements though0 -

Wow, a lot of anti milk comments here. It's only 48 calories or so and milk is an important source of calcium and vitamin D. MFP'ers are the worst for depriving themselves of these essential nutrients b/c most people give up on cereals b/c of the carbs and/or b/c it is processed and they don't drink milk any other way.
DRINKT YOUR MILK!! It builds strong bones and will definitely NOT bulk you up - especially not ½ cup a day.0 -
true
but milk gets me bloated and makes me fart
plus im really restricting calories to 1700 a day.. so if i take whey protien 3 times a day it adds up0 -
Using almond milk or fat free milk halps anything taste better. I drink Shakeology every day with fat free milk. I don't like the water with it. The milk adds some calories and carbs but it so worth it. Once you add you fruit etc you have a great meal repacement or snack.0

I use skim milk and I shake it up with a container from my Magic Bullet. I do it at work and the "cubies" around me probably wouldn't appreciate the noise.
I can't wait to try it as a fruit smoothie.0 -
I always add water to my shake... You dont want any extra fat calories from the milk... You can always try and add almond milk... Or sometimes I add a banana or any kind of fruit, ice and water... Try that.. It will taste like a smoothie.0

I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard either way, with water though I like the water cold, like from a pitcher you keep in the fridge or from a cooler. I shake mine, either with a shaker cup that came with a wire ball agitator, or by putting some icecubes in my water bottle. I prefer it with 1% milk, but sometimes you want to cut a few calories.0

I use a cup of So Delicious Coconut Milk and top it off with a bit of water. One cup of the coconut milk is 50 calories, 1g carb, 1g protein and 5g's of GOOD fat (omega 3). Makes the shake much thicker and tastier.
Used to be a fan of almond milk but have since subbed it out for coconut milk. Was surprised to see the coconut milk had LESS calories that the almond milk. I try to eat paleo so I'm more concerned about carbs than "good" fats.0 -
(Paleo here, too)
If this is a post workout shake you want to add a carb to it. Milk is fine if you can tolerate it. Otherwise fruit will do the trick.0 -

Should be able to get coconut milk at just about any larger grocery store. You may want to Google "So Delicious coconut milk" and it will probably have a store locator near you.
Paleo is kind of a caveman way of eating. It suggests lower carbs (mostly taken in from fruits/vegetables) and higher protein/fats taken in from grassfed/pastured/hormone free animals. It's not Atkins. You can eat stuff like nitrate free bacon, steak, farm raised brown whole eggs, etc. You can also eat dark chocolate (60% cocao content and higher).
The grassfed/pastured animal meat is better to eat because it is higher in Omega 3's (healthy fat) where the commercialized meat is full of hormones which raise the Omega 6's (bad fat). In cases where one can't go completely grassfed, the guy that I follow (Mark Sisson) suggests you cook meats in whole natural butter (beef) and stuff like coconut oil (for chicken & fish) to raise the Omega 3 level and negated the Omega 6's.
There is no calorie counting in the paleo diet because with the increased "good" fat/protein intake your body tends to feel more full. I personally can't go "cold turkey" from my MFP calorie counter so I still use it. This eating plan sheds fat rapidly, raises energy, and seems to stave off illnesses/stiff joints/etc. It's not for everyone but I don't mind having farm fresh eggs and nitrate free REAL bacon while shedding fat at the same time.
I plan on ordering 1/4 cow and 1/2 hog from a local farmer in the coming months. The grassfed/pastured animal is SO much tastier & more tender than the store bought stuff, IMO.0 -

You're lucky. Only almond milk at our Walmart. Have to go to a separate store to get coconut milk and nitrate free bacon. Could also get in at Whole Foods I'd imagine.0 -

I love the Jillian Michaels vanilla protien too! I find water works fine with it, as long as u add ice. What i tend to do is mix 2 scoops, add a few ice cubes, half cup of unsweetened almond milk, and a half cup water, and a few frozen peaches or strawberries, toss it in the blender for a minute or so. super creamy and delicious! appx 30 g of protien, 270 cal.0
