Effexor to Cymbalta

Hi, I posted this same question under the subject "New Med" yesterday, but haven't gotten a response yet. My Md. is switching me from Effexor XR to Cymbalta because the Effexor has made my blood pressure very high. I have been taking it for 3 years, and it may have had a bit to do with my weight gain. Of course now I am afraid that the Cymbalta will make me gain weight. Has anyone out there taken Cymbalta, or both meds before? What can I expect? Is this going to sabotage my weight loss?

  • I took both before. On both I gained..everyone reacts differently so it's hard to say. I've gained from meds before where I was exercising and dieting so really it depends. If you look at rxlist.com & look up your meds it lists the side effects and occurrences of those side effects including weight gain/loss. I found side effects can be managed a bit better with increased exercise and diet, but it all still depends on your reaction really. Hope everything goes well!

Crap! I was afraid that's what you'd say... Maybe not this time, though. I'd rather struggle with my weight without the added problem of the high blood pressure, so I guess I will just have to work extra hard. :-(
  • It is hard finding the right mix but I too would be more concerned about lowering my blood pressure. With effexor I had horrible night sweats and dry mouth. Id just monitor my weight and diet closely and hope for the best. Finding the right mix for your body is sometimes a pain! lol In a few months you should have a ok idea about how it will work for you.

I take Cymbalta daily and have since it first came on the market (except during pregnancy when I switched to a 'safer' med)... as you can see- I have had no trouble losing weight.

I appreciate the feedback! My blood pressure is definitely my top priority. I'll just keep my fingers crossed in the hopes that Cymbalta doesn't hinder my weight loss. Like everybody says: Everyone is different. Let's hope I'm one of the lucky ones!
