Hello, my name is Shara. I'm 23 years old and have come to the point in my life where I want to healty and happy. I have tried dieting numerous times and I have failed. At first I am highly motivated and then before the first week is over, I have already given up. My motivation and drive really suck! Is there any advice out there for me? I would greatly appreciate it.

My advice, Diets always fail... I don't look at this as a diet, but rather a "Journey to Being Healthy". I used to HATE it when my husband would make comment about all my diet food in front of cashiers, because I always got the same reaction. "You are too thin to be on a diet"... well, I was overweight but by only about 10-15 lbs...and even after reaching my goal my husband would say "diet".

I didn't cut out much of anything when I lost my 30 lbs to bring me to my "happy weight (the weight which is easiest for me to maintain)", basically, I changed up my meals. Instead of white rice, I switched to brown. Instead of white bread & crackers, I switched to Whole Grains, Instead of regular pasta I switched to whole wheat or better yet, Dreamfields as it only has 5g of digestible carbs (Great for diabetics) I cut out juice in favor of fresh whole fruits, I chose lower fat cuts of meat, cheese, etc.

I never deprived myself of the foods I was craving. If I REALLY REALLY wanted a bowl of icecream, I had it. I would rather indulge in one bowl satisfying the craving, rather than eating everything I could get my hands until I was able to satisfy that craving....

Meal portions is the big key! Picture your plate (smaller is better than the standard 9"+ sized plates which are fairly standard now) divided into quarters. 1/4 of your plate should be healthy carbs, 1/4 should be lean protein, 1/2 plate fresh or steamed veggies (canned are high in sodium)...

Eat Three healthy meals a day and two -three healthy snacks a day. The more often you eat, the less hungry you will feel. Trust me it works! This is the standard formula I used for 1200-1400 calories a day.. adjust to the correct calorie count you are required.

    Breakfast 300 calories
    Snack 150 calories
    Lunch 300 calories
    Snack 150 calories
    Dinner 300 calories
    Total Calories 1200

    Breakfast 350 calories
    Snack 175 calories
    Lunch 350 calories
    Snack 175 calories
    Dinner 350 calories
    Total Calories: 1400 calories

Also, drink LOTS of water...it helps to flush out the toxins in our bodies, helps with digestion, helps keep us from over eating. Many times we eat when we are not even hungry, but rather thirsty. Drink a glass of water before eating something if it's not yet a meal or snack times to see if that makes the feeling of hunger go away... if not, then eat. Drinking a glass of water before your meal will help keep you from over eating as you will feel full sooner.

Well, I hope some of these tips will help you! Best of luck to you in your Journey to be healthy!

    Lisa
