So I just munched a pickle and thought low in calories....well when I went and looked at the back of the jar it reads "serving size 1/4 of a pickle, calories 0". Huh? That can't be right! Now I don't expect them to have a lot of calories but some.....what gives? How can they put 0 calories on the label?

I think if it's less than 5, they probably don't put it on there. One of those "rounding" things the FDA allows. They must be rounding down. They have very little calories, that's why I can eat a whole cucumber and not think twice about it.0

Gosh darn double post. Sorry.0

the effort to eat it is > than the caloric value. Be careful with sugars in sweet pickles ans sodium in Dill and Sweet.0

Well a cucumber is virtually water and like next to nothing in cals...so it makes sense I guess. I LOVE dill pickles and could eat a jar in one sitting...too bad the sodium in them is a total killer.0

I think pickles have 5 calories but the sodium will make u retain water=water weight. I sometimes put in salad but since I've become more aware of the negative affects of sodium I eat sparingly. (once u read labels u will be shocked at how much sodium are in many in fact most canned goods!!)0

I love dill pickles, too, but yeah there is a ton of sodium in a single pickle spear, as all the MFPers mentioned. I recently started buying Persian cucumbers at Trader Joe's. They come about 6 to a package for a couple of bucks. They are a great grab one snack. Sometimes if I want a bit of salt, I will VERY sparingly sprinkle a tad bit of sea salt on it. A lot less than I'd get in a dill pickle.

Yes pickles are low cal but it is the sodium you have to worry about. Two baby dills are 10 calories & 5 bread & butter sweet pickles are 35 calories. But very high in sodium, so I limit them when I do have them to no more than 2 baby dills or 5 sweet in one day & I do not have them everyday!0
