To all of you who have shown such great weight loss success, I was just curious if you started out using the goals that MFP set for you? Or did you adjust the protein/carb/fat ratio? I feel as though I should be eatting more protein and less carbs than what MFP has set me up at?

I started out with what MFP said. Now that I'm closer to goal I have it set at 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat....thinking I still need to tweak it because 40% carbs feels like too much.

I started with the MFP goals and it worked pretty well for me. But the protein is indeed a bit low. Now that I adjusted my goals a bit (like Amanda 40/30/30) I feel even better. But I think you will have to experiment a bit. Everybody is different.
  • Hey there! Nice to meet you! I changed the daily calorie intake to 1500 instead of 1200. I was 215 when I started and 1200 was a bit low for me. You burn more naturally when you're bigger and you have to eat in order to lose weight, so 1200 isn't enough. The more weight I lost the lower my calorie goal got. Now I'm down to 1200. You do need more protein than the site sets for you. If you have a pretty intense workout, then you'll need more carbs too. For the first month my goals were 1500 cals a day and at least 120min of cardio per week. Those were easy goals and I lost 13 lbs that first month. After 3 months of that I upped my workout to something more intense and started adding muscle and then the weight just started "melting" off. It just really takes a lot of patience! It's taken me almost 2 years and a tummy tuck to get my body to where it is now and I still have 10 lbs to go. I did have a 6 month stint within that 2 years where I fell off the wagon and gained 20 lbs back. But that's okay! I accepted my failure and just started over. I know it's said all the time but belive me when I tell you, if I can do....ANYONE can do it! Stay committed and try not to become obsessed with the scale. You'll be amazed at how strong you are and how successful will be at this! Good luck! Let me know if you need any advise. I'll be happy to help!

I would compare the settings to what registered dietitians accept as health guidelines are (http://www.eatright.org) and stick to those. too much protein can be bad for your kidneys. I've read that 0.8g/kg bodyweight is a good rule of thumb.

Wow you did great! It gives me hope that I can too! I do take phentermine pills though so the Dr who prescribed them suggested 1000-1200 calories a day.... not sure if I should go more than that or not. I plan on getting off these pills within the next month so hopefully they help with the 1200 calories then I can adjust as needed when I'm off the pills. What percentage was protein when you were at 1500 calories?

Thank you that seems like a good idea. I wanted a nutritionist but was unable to afford one, but I guess looking for guidelines is a good substitute.
