    I'm a newbie here too , but so far everyone has been very welcoming. Its a great place to be from what I have seen so far and the tools are great -especially the food diary, exercise record etc. Like you I have a lot to lose & also for medical reasons. I'm one of the older members & my knees are wearing out. Down here in Cornwall unless you show that you can lose weight they won't even put you on the list to see a consultant at the hospital..so this time I have to do it. i would add you as a friend but likewise not sure yet how to do so!

    I am absolutely APPALLED that someone on this site....knowing that support is key....would insult you. I hope you did not accept their friend request. I can only tell you of my experience here on MFP. I have made some of the nicest, greatest, kindest, most supportive, beautiful friends that I would KILL to be able to enjoy in 'real' life (even tho this IS real life!).

    While you absorb all the support given to you here on this message board, in your mind you can tell that obnoxious, rude, unkind, nonsupportive person to GO STRAIGHT TO HELL....and if you can't do that, send me their user name in a private message and I WILL DO IT...for the credibility of this site.

    I am truly sorry you experienced that, but DO NOT LEAVE MFP. Thumb your nose to this A$$wipe and have the last laugh by succeeding on your journey!

    To be honest I've never seen anyone on this site that isn't motivating or nice, much less insulting. You landed on a random idiot I would say lol

    Anyway don't let that experience ruin it for you there are a lot of good people here who are willing to help and are supportive. I can personally say that coming here has helped me stay on track.

    Wow... that's not cool at all. Everyone I've encountered has been wonderful on here. Of course, I can dish it out as much as the next person might be able to, so all is fair in love and war. But definitely dont let some idjit discourage you. You will find that there are far more willing to help and motivate than there are trying to bring you down. Report em, block em, whatever is available, and be done with em. No need to waste your energy on them. That only gives em what they want.

    I would never have recommended this site to you if I thought that this would have happened to you! I have been here for 4 months now and I am truly sorry that the first thing that happened to you here was so appalling. Hopefully you have now realised that this is a very rare thing to happen and that the majority of peeps are supportive, motivating and friendly.

    Please make sure you stay babes! This place is amazing and sooooooo supportive! As for the *kitten* that called you what they did? I hope they gain so much weight their butt becomes so large it gets named as a Continent! Seriously? They obviously have issues to deal with and I hope that they find a way to deal with them without resorting to picking on other people.

    Unfortunately, there are internet trolls who come here and create a profile just to do this very thing. I picture some 17-year-old in his parents' basement with too much time on his hands who thinks this is the height of witticism. Usually, the site moderators catch on pretty quick and they soon disappear. If you haven't already, please report this person and Mike (the moderator and creator of this site) will take care of it.

    Sometimes, they'll just create a new profile and start all over again. Eventually, they tire of it and move on to some other forum to wreak havoc. There's always another one to take their place, though. It's one of the reasons I don't do "friends" on forums.

    Rest assured this was an isolated incident. Stick with us and good luck!

    I'm sorry to hear this happened to you. My guess is: this wasn' t a member of the community, but someone who signed up with the express purpose of insulting overweight people. A woman reported a similar incident the other day, mixed in with lewed remarks about her pictures. I *hope* these people are guys under the age of 14, who will feel ashamed in a few years when they realize how stupid and immature, not to mention offensive, this behaviour is.

    Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to vet new members and to automatically tell who signs up just to be a puerile jerk. I'd just report them and put the incident aside.

    (BTW, I don't accept every friend request myself -- I look if there's a credible note, or if it's from someone who has posted in the same thread I have and whose post might have resonated with mine. Sorry for those who are merely looking for friends without posting.)

    Don't let one bad apple chase you away. Most everybody seems to be very nice and supportive on here, and it seems like this person would be the rare exception.

    I agree with everyone else, that it is rare to find a person like that on this site. However, it is the internet and there will always be trolls who find amusement at the cost of another person's feelings. I do remember when I first joined, I got a couple of 'friend requests' from people that I didn't know. I just denied the request b/c I wasn't that familiar with the site yet and I didn't know if I could trust them. (I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing would have happen to me that you're describing) But, I've developed friends on here since then, I would say that anyone you connect with in a blog or post like this would be safe to friend or someone from your real life who has joined on here as well. Avoid 'strangers' that you've never interacted with, unless they send a friendly email and can explain WHY they wanted to be your friend.

    It'll save you some stress in the end.
