Exercising while sick?

So, I'm starting to get a cold (scratchy throat, no fever). Should I maintain my 30 minutes daily brisk walk or scale back to avoid getting sicker?

  • Let your body be the judge...if you feel up to it, then go ahead.

Last fall I had a cold. I wasn't thrilled to get up every morning to run but I did it. I kept a Hall's mentho-lyptus in my mouth and a spare with me. That kept me from coughing. Afterwards I felt better and had more energy all day. It still took my usual 2 weeks to get over doing the dayquil/nyquil thing. Good luck.

I would probably do different exercise depending on how my body feels. I want to stay indoors when I'm sick and make sure my throat stays warm, so I would do exercises at home like crunches and aerobics in 10 minute stretches. I agree that it could help you feel better perhaps even sooner, but listen to your body.

On a slightly different note, don't worry as much about your calorie intake while you are sick. Doesn't mean eat whatever you crave, but make sure you are giving your body enough nutrients to fight the cold. If that means more than the targeted calorie goal, then so be it.
  • The flu is ripping through out place and knock on wood, I haven't gotten it yet.
I am not feeling great and haven't been this weekend but still got up as usual and did my 50 min of working out hard.
I think as long as you are not overdoing it and you feel you can make it through, it will do wonders for you.
I find that after the workout, I feel much better.
Something is said about helping to fight off illness when you exercise as well.
Hope you feel better soon. :flowerforyou:
  • Feeling a serious loss of appetite with this cold. I'm at least 700 calories short today. Do I eat anyway?

I use to stop my exercise program when I got sick but that always led to me never going back to my exericse routine. As long as you can go ahead and workout that is what I am planning on doing this time.
