Hi guys, i am type 1 diabetic so usually stick to sugar free drinks, however when i try and diet i usually notice my intake of these types of drinks skyrockets! I was wondering does anyone know whether they are actually bad for you when trying to lose weight? Heard a couple of conflicting reports and wondered if anyone else had ran into this problem?
Cheers

Sorry I can't help you out but I'd like to hear other people's answers to this too. I drink Crystal Light if I am craving sugary drinks so I wonder if I am just harming my progress as well.0

They're better than regular soda for sure but theres still a lot of sodium and other things in them that aren't good for you. Try to stick to water or teas. Breaking the soda habit is tough....it took me a LONG time but it gets easier. You can do it!0

I do not think any form of coke is good for you. I think drinking them in moderation is fine, but not drinking them all day every day. I limit myself to 1-2 a day is that. I have not had a coke in a few days now. I drink water for the most part. You really really need water to flush your body & kidneys out every day. Drinking more water will help you loose more weight than cokes will.
I drank 3 1/2 33.8 fl oz bottles of water yesterday. I felt great to. If on chance I do have a coke it is a diet coke. If I drink one, then that is all I will drink for the day. Good Luck with your weight loss.0 -
Yes they are bad for you. as a diabetic you should put some stevia in water. It's really good. I love.
What diet soda does is trick your body into thinking some sugar is coming and it doesn't thus making you hungry and eating more.
Eating more....bad for weight loss.
Stay away from it as a rule of thumb.0 -
The more you consume of things that are "sweet" (this includes artificial sweetners) the more you will crave. There have been studies that have indicated that consuming artificial sweetners actually does increase cravings for more. When my husband was diagnosed as prediabetic I consulted a dietician and nutritionist . . . both said to lessen and try to eliminate consumption of diet pop and artificial sweetners in general.
Go for water or herbal tea more often until you can wean yourself off of these.0 -
just don't go crazy, you are in charge of that. I have a diet coke whenever I do a shot of alcohol. But I am not a chronic pop drinker, Juice is my weakness, specifically Grapefruit0

Study done a couple of years ago - with women only but I could apply to men also - involving diet soda and kidney function. Of course it was just one study.
My dad is diabetic and on dialysis and my brother was just diagnosed. I'll stick with water because I'm not going to be #3

This is the best description I was able to find on Phosphoric acid
I'm having a hard time kicking my diet pepsi habit...good luck!
Phosphoric acid is a sneaky ingredient in sodas that slows down our metabolisms, but no one is talking about it. Phosphoric acid is a chemical used to acidify foods and beverages, and it also provides a tangy taste.
Here's the problem... when you consume acid, your body becomes more acidic. When your body becomes more acidic all of your cells function less efficiently and your metabolism slows down.
Your body has a certain pH level. pH refers to potential hydrogen and ranges from 0-14. 0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most basic (or alkaline). 7 is neutral and around 7.4 is optimal for the blood.
Many weight loss plans (like the book The Ultimate pH Solution by Michelle Schoffro Cook, DNM) focus on correcting pH balance by making your body less acidic, and my take is that the consumption of acid is potentially another reason consuming diet sodas is linked with the development of Metabolic Syndrome and weight gain.
Phosphoric acid is an irritant to your digestive system and it will slow down your metabolism and negatively affect cell function.
The artificial sweeteners may not be the ring leader in the assault on our metabolisms. Our digestive system is always being bombarded with irritants, such as sugar, chemicals, and preservatives, and constantly adding acid to your digestive system will likely decrease your body's ability to burn fat and keep you healthy.
In a perfect world we would not consume any food or drinks with chemicals or preservatives, but we don't live in a perfect world.
So if you are trying to lose stomach fat or lose weight, I recommend that you do your best to avoid chemicals when you can, and try to drink clean filtered or distilled water as often as possible.

stevia? What is that? There are bad reports on anything but I also heard the bubbles in sodas deplete your body of oxygen. Personally I only allow two 8oz glass a day. Thats a far cry from 2liteers a day lol I am type one diabetic as well.0

Artificial sweeteners are not good for you. I don't know how it works with diabetics, but studies have shown that the brain doesn't distinguish between artificial sweeteners and natural sugars, so insulin is still released causing your body to stop burning fat and to use sugar from your blood for energy. And when there isn't enough sugar in your blood your brain sends hunger signals to make you eat to replenish your blood sugar.
But even if that whole process doesn't work the same way, the bottom line is that artificial sweeteners are unnatural, chemicals that are often dangerous. Splenda (sucralose) is made by modifying the carbon chain. Glucose is taken out of the carbon chain and chlorine is replaced. This creates a dangerous chloro-carbon that is very harmful to our bodies.
I'm sure being diabetic is no picnic, I had gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy, but I know it's not the same thing. I'm sure not being able to eat sugar makes things very difficult and frustrating, but do try to limit the amount of artificial sweeteners you consume. They can cause all kinds of healthy problems.0 -
The best diet soda is.....water....diet sodas have artificial sweeteners in them...these chemicals were originaly developed as bio-weapons.......someone realized it was sweet and it didnt do any visable immediate damage to anyone....someone lobbied congress to get the rites to sell it for human consumption....and im sure after millions of bribes it went though. No long term studdies were conducted ...later starting in the 80's people started showing up in hospitals with signs of poisoning...no one could figure it out at first...until it was linked to diet sodas....this crap doesnt always affect all people the same...some people burn it out with their livers...but that being said , I would prefer my liver spending its time burning fat...not cleaning needless chemicals out of my system.....if you need a sweet drink...make tea cool it off add lemon and stevia to taste.
just my opinion...not trying to offend anyone.0 -
I recently read something about diet soda contributing to insulin resistance. I don't want to misquote the specifics, but try googling "diet soda and insulin resistance" for more info. It scared me into cutting waaaay back on my diet coke habit. Now it is my "social drink" - I have it at a party or at a restaurant, but I don't buy it to keep in the house. Just my own approach - everyone has to find what works for them. My goal this year is "balance" and not living in extremes like I have in the past. Good luck to you!0

I agree with you 100% on this one. I have a co-worker who finally cut out diet soda (at least one 20oz bottle a day) and her migraines are gone. It affects everyone differently.
I also heard a story of a truck driver who kept liters of them in his truck. He drank down a liter a day until he started having siezures (convulsions was the word used). He stopped drinking diet soda and they went away.0 -
Stevia is a NATURAL sweetener that is derived from the Stevia plant. It's not as popular as other sweeteners, but it can be found in your local grocery store in the form of Truvia. It's in the sugar isle. I don't care for it, but my husband absolutely loves it. It has also been used around the world for many years.0

Big Stevia fan here. Can't tell the difference. Even diet sodas are bad if you're trying to lose weight.0

this thread actually scared me away from diet pop...so not drinking it anymore.0

Stevia is a natural sweetner. Look for it in your grocery store under these names and more. Stevia in the raw, truvia, sweet only and more. I love it.0
