Eating under when sick

I have a pretty bad cold right now. I know the old saying "feed a cold, starve a fever" but I never have any appetite when I'm sick, plus it hurts to swallow. I usually eat 1200 a day, not counting exercise (which I probably won't do much of today). Do you think it's ok to be way under for calories while I'm sick?

Try eating things higher in calories when you can manage to swallow something. That way you can get in enough fuel for your body to help get you better faster!

We've had the crud in our house for a week and I'm having the same issue today. I would suggest eating things that are smooth and soothing to your throat if it's irritated. Heck, this might be time to have some good old fashioned hot cocoa if you have the points left. Warm to sooth you and yummy chocolate too! I don't think a couple days under will hurt but I usually have meal replacement shakes in the house, just in case (like boost or ensure). Those are around 200-300 calories and can help you replace the nutrients while you are sick and don't feel like eating. Get better soon!
  • I'm sick this week too...strep throat and an eye/ear infection...I'm kinda a mess. Eating is not on my list of fun things to do b/c swallowing hurts so much. So I totally get it.

Soups definitely help, and drinking lots of pure juices and tea with honey helps with getting some nutrition in.

If you can't make your calories I wouldn't be too concerned. Eat/drink what you can and concentrate mainly on getting better.

Oh and lots of fluids :)

    Hope you get well soon

I recommend you try drinking your meals at this point. Soup. Juice. Shakes. You need nutrients more than ever when you're under the weather.
