I have a question. I just set my husband up on MFP becuase I needed to know how many calories he should be eating in order to lose weight. Well he is 6'5 and CW is 382. MFP says he should be eating 3030 a day. Is this correct? This just seems to be a lot and he has been eating multiple portions of the food i make. He logged yesterday and it said he still had 1400 more calories to eat. So i need your help as I am lost in the area of male weight loss and eating. Thanks for you help!

How fast is he trying to lose? It sounds like it probably could be accurate. My maintenance calories are 2250, and I'm 5'11', 173. So It would make sense that his maintenance calories are are around 3500-4000 per day based on his height and weight, and 3030 sounds like a reasonable goal calories based on that. That being said, since he is probably looking to lose a lot of weight, he can probably do with less than recommended by MFP. But still, because of his size and weight, I'd make sure he gets at least 2500 a day.

That number does seem high, but given his height and CW I'd say it's probably about right... it depends on what you've set as his goal weight, rate of loss (how much he wants to lose each week) and activity level.

When I first started out my initial calorie goal was 2500 a day I think (and I'm 5'10).
As I have lost weight and re-adjusted my goals it has gradually dropped, to the point where I am now on 1500 a day.

If he's eating plenty and still finding he has a large number of calories left (eg: 1400), then perhaps try re-adjusting the goal weight and increasing the weight loss per week goal, as that should drop his daily calorie goal to something that will hopefully be more reasonable.

At 327 lb i dropped my calories down to 1400 / day...no exercise...... after i dropped 40lb and felt healthy enough to exercise, i joined MFP and did it by the book....im 5'10" and 257lb....ive set my calories to 1600 and adjust with exercise....basicly I try to eat healthy..but if i slip up...i pay with exercise...3030 is a HUGE amount of healty food, unless hes exercising hard at work all day, I would drop that by at least 400 and see how it goes for a week...then adjust again either up or down, if hes going to start weight training to keep muscle mass...adjust your protien amounts about 15% higher and carbs lower.....again..this is just what worked for me.

Tell me what age he is and I will check for you on a different calculator I use. If you have his body fat % that would be even better but that it is not essential. Also, can you tell me his activity level (does he have a sedentary job, how many times he works out a week.)

3030 seems about right but no harm in double checking.
  • It sounds about right to be honest -

I stand at 5'11 (well 5'10.8 if you want to be exact, but you wouldn't withhold a measly 0.2 cm would you? ..lol), and i was told after a BMR test my maintenance calories should be around 2850 if i wanted to maintain. I Want to loose weight fast, so im kinda restricting myself to 1600 calories a day (although i dont meet this target everyday - i do go over sometimes)

I'm 6ft and started at 342 and at a 2lbs a week loss MFP stated I need 2160 a day (not including any exercise calories).

I am finding it hard to get to that, its a lot of healthy food! I aim to hit 2000 a day min with 500 cals off for exercise and keep my net calories above 1500 a day. I was at least 1000 calories off my goal every day last week and lost 3lbs, strange as it sounds I think if I up my calories I will lose more.

I would suggest aiming for a min of 1800 to 2000 net calories a day based on my experiences, from what I have read it is just all about keeping you body out of "starvation mode" where is starts to store fat and you weight loss can really slow down.

    Hope this helps.

Well, that makes me look really BIG at 5'4" and 174lbs! Maybe if I could stretch myself a bit my weight would be fine

As for your husband's calories: I would say that 3030 is probably correct, and if anything, may even be a little low!!! It all depends on his age, current activity levels, how much weight he wants to lose. Let's assume he doesn't move around much, has a desk job, is about 35 years of age, and wants to lose 20% of his body weight. Just to maintain his current weight, his calorie intake would be about 4469, so to lose that 20% weight, his calorie intake would be around 3500 per day, and with exercise to burn up 200 calories per day he should lose around 90lbs by October this year.

It doesn't sound very encouraging when you look at the figures, but obviously the more exercise he puts in, the more weight he should lose. The important thing to remember is that if he doesn't hit targets, he won't lose weight. Once he does start to lose weight, he will feel MUCH better and with some discipline he could transform his weight, shape, and lifestyle.

    Good luck to him.

He is 27 with a sit down job. I have set him up to lose one pound a week. We were just trying to get an idea of what kinda of calories to be consuming. But now he has started inputting his foods so that he could actually what he was doing. He has been working out about 4 to 5 times a week. I want him to be able to shrink down and I am worried about him losing weight to fast. But I will adjust his weight lose to 2 lbs a week and see how that goes for him. Thanks for all of your advice! And I wish all of you luck on your journey. If you would like to add my hubs his name is menyendez.
    Thanks
