...Thanks for the compliment?

Last night I went to dinner with my best friend. Here's a conversation we had when we first sat down (keep in mind I haven't seen her in about a month).

Her: "Congratulations on your weight loss - I saw you lost like 9 pounds!"
Me: "Thanks! Can you tell?"
Her: "Well, no."

I was a little taken aback. That's not a good thing in my opinion...I want to LOOK like I lost 9 pounds! Can someone please help me out here? I don't have a ton of weight to lose to begin with, and moreso need to tone, so 9 pounds should show...right?

I have a problem seeing weight loss, or gain or whatever. If I see you regularly I don't see it at all, but if you go for like a year and loose a bunch of weight I see it. It may just be that they don't see it, but know you did and wanted to compliment you so you did feel better. And if you know you lost 9 pounds thats awesome! When you tone up, give them a hug and they will go DANG GIRL! You got some guns going on :) Hope I helped! Keep up the good work!

Im dealing with the same thing. My husband lost 6 lbs and I lost 5. EVERYONE notices his "thin face, thinner frame," blah blah, but not one person has mentioned my loss. I think its because Im tall. ???
I can gain 10 lbs and no one will really notice, which is great! But the downside is that no one notices when I work hard to LOSE those ten pounds :(

You should still be proud of those nine pounds!! Its not easy!!
  • not really, i have lost 9.4lbs since starting MFP and when i look in the mirror i still look the same, my wife agreed, but yesterday i tried on some of my old clothes that were once too tight, that now fit comfortably. i dropped a shirt size and a belt size and need new pants because they are all sliding while i walk, so something must be working, don't get discourage by not seeing what you want right away, but keep up the good work and the results will prove worthy :-)

It probably depends on where you lost the pounds from. It could be you lost it a place a female friend wouldn't generally look (ex. butt, thighs) or possibly your clothing hid the place where the weight was to begin with.

In my experience, that second part really can make a big difference. I've actually had people say I look like I've lost weight when I've gained it and I think it's because of what I've been wearing.

I'm having the opposite problem. The scale says I haven't lost a thing, but a friend of mine told me she could see a difference. I think it has to do with the toning I have done, not the weight loss exactly. I'm hoping the scale catches up pretty soon. :) Good luck!

People who see you on a regular basis don't generally notice as easily. Depeonds on what you are wearing too. Nobody at work noticed until I tucked my shirt in and after that pretty much everybody at work made funny faces at me and said "Have you lost more weight?"

    This is so true!

OP- don't forget about water weight also maybe change up your workouts like if you are a runner, maybe do kickboxing, or Wii fit, or Pilates...if you change your normal fitness routine for 10 days you will probably see a difference. Good luck!
  • people only really started to notice my weight loss when I started to wear cloths that fit (all mine were HUGE) but I never wore the smaller sizes because I hated to go shopping ;) But I agree its all in where you lost it. It sucks when people don't notice, but maybe shes not very observant ? What matters is that you know you lost it and you feel better about it.

Weight loss i a funny thing. It amazes me that I can tell when I gained 5 pounds. Holy cow, the clothes are too snug and I see lumps. Now when I lose 5 pounds? I see nothing. Grr... how frustrating.

My first noticeable moment was after I lost about 9 punds. I saw nothing for days... then my husband tells me one morning that I looked skinnier. Imagine that. You would have thought by the way he said it, I'd lost all that weight overnight!

Keep in mind, that being a female, we have to battle against hormones, water retention, and all that other female stuff each month. So, don't get discouraged. Just keep doing what you're doing. You notice that it's working. For now, that's all that matters.

    By the way... congrats! :o)
  • What I really want to know is -- DO YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE?

Ultimately, it's nice to have friends and family notice the change, but you have to remember you'd making this change for YOU. If you feel good and that extra energy shows, other people are more likely to notice. In the meantime, enjoy your victory and keep your chin up. You're doing an amazing job!

I agree -- I'm terrible at seeing weight loss in other people. My sister lost like 15 lbs. and the only reason I noticed at all was because I knew she was doing Weight Watchers and my mom had told me she'd lost so much. But I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. I also didn't notice when our other sister got breast implants. I didn't know until like 5 years later.

I wouldn't take it too hard. She was congratulating you on your progress. YOU know there's a difference. Some of us just aren't super observant about that kind of thing. I am somewhat surprised that she didn't do the tactful thing and say "yes" when you asked her that, but whatever. Some of also aren't very tactful.

If we wait on others to compliment us we may wait a long time. So I say compliment ourselves. And if others think thats pride then so be it.

Okay you must have been reading my mind! I am a runner and when I first started MFP, I just ran more...I know better, I'm just nervous to try something new and fail. I recently started lifting, and bought Zumba for Wii! Thanks for the suggestions!

Good question...YES! Obviously not daily, but I saw a picture of myself during Christmas and I could totally tell in my face. It made me really happy! And I can tell with my clothes too :) THANK YOU!

THANK YOU EVERYONE! This is really where I need to turn for encouragement, because you all know what others are going through. My first pound was an accomplishment, and every pound after that is its own victory. Thank you everyone :glasses:

As long as your pants are looser, you know you are taking up less space! Pat yourself on the back!
