Stupid Scale (Just need to vent)

Not exactly weight loss related, but it's ______ me off....

I weigh myself daily. I know it's not a great idea, but so far it's working, and once the weight loss slows down (after the honeymoon period), I'll start weighing in less frequently.

I will generally weigh myself 2 or 3 times in a row, because sometimes the weight changes by 0.2 pounds (maybe how I'm standing on it), and then I'll generally take the weight that occurs more than the other.
This morning however, I must have stepped on and off close to 20 times, never getting the same reading twice. The weight fluctuated by 2.6 pounds.
Stupid machine....

Anyone know the shelf life of digital scales? I've had mine for 3 or 4 years.

  • Oh I thought I was the only one that did that!! I use to (and occasionally still do) weigh myself literally like over and over until I got the same two readings out of three. I don't know the shelf life of scales, but I do know the way I stand has something to do with it for sure. When I rock back on my heels it fluctuates. I just weigh myself at home and at the gym now...I wouldn't worry too much about it though!! Just do the tape measure thing if you think you're going crazy. That always helps me.

P.S. I weigh daily as well. It keeps me motivated. I don't know how people do it like once a week or once a month. To each their own, though!

I do the same thing. When mine starts acting up like that I change the batteries and it helps.

AH! mine did that to me, It confused me for a while, until my husband figured it out. It was because if one of the feet were sitting in a spot on the grout (not a level surface) it would fluctuate by about 2 pounds!

now I still do it 2-3 times. I weigh myself in the morning, empty stomach, after using the bathroom. After that I stay away from the scale all day (and have gotten out of the habit of every day, just when I have to weigh in, or I think I can see a new ab poking through or something   )
  • If you can, purchase a scale you find in the doctor's office. My parent's have one and I use it all the time. However, you shouldn't weigh yourself daily. Your clothes will be your best scale.

it's true! I live by my measuring tape :)
  • I find that most scales have variability in the readings i.e. accuracy. My technique is to weigh myself daily at the same time (usually in the morning after bathroom before breakfast) and record that weight without judgment. Body weight fluctuates with water/salt/hormones etc. Every week, I chart the daily weights, take the average of the seven days and it generally shows net weight loss even if the line is not straight (i.e. I go up and down in daily weight). This technique accounts for the accuracy/variability of the scale and the variability of my body especially over several months/years.
  • I totally feel everyone's pain. It nice to know there are other people out ther with the same frustrations. I'm struggling!!! I gained 40 lbs in one year after getting married and really want it all off tomorrow. This three day weekend set me back so I'm trying not to beat myself up about it. HELP!
