Doing HIIT at home on an elliptical

I have a question about this. I have an old elliptical and i don't know much about HIIT, only that it's intervals of intense running and walking on an elliptical, treadmill or running. How would I go about doing this just starting out and from home? Any ideas? Thanks!

It might be easier to do on a treadmill or a track, but an elliptical can work. Just get going till you get your heart rate up to 60-65% (fat burning mode, like you're walking or lightly jogging), and then begin to sprint intensely (or on the elliptical.. move faster). Do it for at least a minute, and try to get your heart rate up near the max; should be around 160 or higher. Go back to "walking" for 2 minutes, "sprint" again for 1 minute, etc. Give yourself a day of rest before you do it again, and if you feel ready, try to do 1:50 of walking, 1:10 of running, and transition into very little if any walking over time.0
