I'm new to MFP and hoping that this program will change the way I look at food, exercise, nutrition, and myself.. long story short- I've struggling with disordered eating for about 7 years. I lost a bunch of weight drastical in college to the point of almost being anorexic and have struggled with it ever since. My main enemy - the scale. I admit that I live and die by it..weighing myself a few times a day. However, my days basically revolve around that number. I have tried to get rid of the scale, however I can never go more than a day without it. I have come along way since college days, however I am ready to conquer my weight obession for good. I workout regularly and have a decent diet, but my fear... is that I will gain weight from eating. I'm a very blessed mother of a one year old and have a terrific husband - I just lack confidence in myself and I attribute it to my weight.
How can I revive my metabolism and have confidence that by just eating and working out that I will not gain weight?!?

It is a daily struggle for sure. Set goals for yourself i.e. I will only weigh twice a week. Mark those on your calendar and stick to it. Keep the scale out of site, like in the back of the closet where you have to go and actually find it to use it. Journal all your food and exercise on MFP and keep within your calorie range. These things will help you get started with shedding that obsession. Hope this helps.
  • I think you have to just take it one day at a time and remember that you have a little one who needs you to be healthy, and set a good example. I know what you mean about the scale, I've never had a full on eating disorder but I've definitely had some disordered eating and a scale obsession. I'm limiting myself to weighing in once a week now, even though it's really hard.

If you're that obsessed with it, maybe you should ditch the scale. If you can't toss it entirely just have your husband put it in his trunk where you can't easily get to it except on weigh in days.

Take your body measurements and check them once a month. If you're smaller then obviously it's working!

One other suggestion, get a kitchen scale if you don't already have one. If you're weighing and measuring your food you'll keep a more accurate food log and your weight should drop if you stay with it. The other benefit is that you will begin to know intuitively what a portion size should look like.
  • Your body is a machine that requires fuel. Ideally, you should give your body the best fuel you can and in the proper amount. If you give it too much; or "bad" fuel like junk food - you'll gunk it up and it won't run so well.

However - if you don't give it enough...there's a built-in override system in our bodies; and it WILL provide itself with energy - even if it steals that from your organs/bones/teeth, etc.

Hopefully, you've entered your weight goals into MFP, and it has told you how many calories you need each day to accomplish your goal - whether it's to gain or lose weight. Don't obsess about it - just plug away at it. The real goal is to be the best Mom you can be - and that includes being healthy enough to be their for your kids!
