Help Needed from a "Green Thumb" -- Growing Herbs

Hi all - One of my new years resolution was to try to grow my own herbs to use for cooking - I've heard fresh herbs add a lot of flavor and can be used to make your own salad dressings, marinades, pizza toppings, etc. Not to mention I might be able to save a little money since buying them at the grocery store adds up quickly!
I recently got an "herb garden" from my family as a b-day gift. It's a medium sized planter filled with sage, basil, rosemary, parsley and some others. Any tips on how to keep to growing? My living arrangements don't provide any outdoor gardening space, so I have to keep in indoors.... thanks in advance!
