Weight vs. Inches

I am now into week 3 of my journey. I've noticed that since last Tuesday, I've not lost a thing - I actually fluctuate a few ounces. Last week I was ovulating (sorry if that is a TMI), and I asked if that could affect weight loss and the replies seem to say yes it could. However, I decided to remeasure myself and I've lost a couple inches, despite the lack of weight loss.
How is this possible?
I've heard both sides of this - one being sometimes you'll loose inches but not pounds.
And then I've heard watching "The Biggest Loser" that that "theory" is a bunch of junk basically...saying in so many words, that either you are loosing pounds or you aren't.
I haven't changed anything food wise since I started - but I have started exercising 4 times a week for now.
What is going on with me?

the scale lies!!!
keep taking measurements because your waist measurement does not lie (unless it's that TOM and you're bloated)...
one theory is that when you lose fat, but gain muscle, you could actually gain weight. a lb of fat takes up a lot more space than 1 lb of muscle... kind of like lead vs. feathers.0 -
In my opinion, from what I know, muscle is more compact than fat so perhaps your replacing some fat with muscle which would take longer for you to see any changes on the scale. In the long run its better because muscle burns more calories but this will take a while before the scale will show the muscles work.
I had the same issue today, dropped 3 inches off my thighs and this morning gained an inch...probably muscles since the scale hasn't moved....its a process....a slow process. Just stick with it!0 -
i was actually going to come back and post that same link! great blog post!0 -
Erin, I deal with the same roller coaster. I am in the latter of my 3rd week, and one day I loose 1 lb and the next day I gain a half pound back. But I've measured and have lost 2.5" waist, and 2.5 on Hips and 1" thighs and my clothes are showing me a difference. So I look at it this way.. The number on the scale doesn't matter as long as my clothes are showing I am losing and I am feeling good...
Remember muscle vs fat--- 1 lb of fat is = to 3 lbs of muscle.. So if your now working out you are probably building some muscle tissue that is taking the place of the fat. This is a really good thing.. Muscle will increase your metabolism big time.. Keep working at it you will see it and feel it... Good Luck0 -
Thank you all! I was beginning to feel defeated esp when I feel like I am giving it my all and doing everything right! I'll keep my chin held high and keep moving forward! :-)0

Yes, me too! It's was pretty amazing to see!
Erin, definitely copy and paste the above link. It will totally make you feel better. And hey, if you're losing inches, you're getting smaller. That's ALWAYS a good thing! Keep up the good work and you will see results, even if the scale doesn't move!0 -
I'm the same way. My scale is still a brat but I can SEE a difference and I can FEEL a difference. That's what counts. I'm just going to keep plugging along and eventually my scale will catch up or I will run it over with a truck. It's really a win win situation. Don't give up!0
