It's Time to Fooducate Yourself!

On the surface, food shopping isn't all that difficult. Stroll the aisles, put stuff in your cart and pay. (And maybe grab a free sample along the way.)

But without a nutrition expert by your side, how do you know you're making the best choices?

Fortunately, there's an app for that.

With Fooducate, it's easy to find out what's really in those packaged goods at the grocery store. Just snap a photo of the bar code with your iPhone (or iPad or iTouch) and you'll receive a listing of product highlights, both good and bad.

Fooducate will even tell you the down and dirty details that some manufacturers would rather not broadcast, like whether the product includes trans fats, additives and preservatives, or food colorings.

If the product doesn't fit your standards, you can click on the "Alternatives" tab to get other suggestions that fill the bill.

Better living through technology.

Unfortunately, I have a droid, so it's not for me, but thought I'd share.

I just did a search on itunes for "fooducate" and nothing came up.
  • Do you have a marketplace for your apps? Maybe it's there? That's where I found my MFP app and downloaded it. Or is itunes the marketplace? Duh. LOL.

Don't you get all this from the label?

The marketplace for the iphone is the itunes app store. Maybe there is another marketplace out there, but I don't know about it. Being able to scan the bar code would be neat though.

Doesn't reading a food label tell you the same information (trans fats, ingredient list, etc)? Please don't take that the wrong way, I am not trying to be a jerk, I just don't see what value this app is offering.

Yes, but there are people out there who aren't aware of how helpful or harmful some ingredients are and this app sounds like it'll spell it out in layman's terms for them.

And there are things that it'll show that I'm not aware of like "Contains Controversial Additive BHT". Also I like that it takes them all and rolls them into a "grade" I can quickly compare one to another without having to go item by item.
