What to do after going over the calorie goal?

Every once in awhile I blow my calorie goal for the day by overindulging. What's the best thing to do for this? Do you ignore it, and just stick to the routine of restricting the calories each day or should these calories be made up with more extreme dieting the next day?

Thoughts? Facts?

If I have time to get a work out in after the overage, I'll do that. If not, I just get up the next day and try to get my normal amount to lose weight. I'm at 1200 calories though, so it's unhealthy to go under that. If you're at a much higher number, it may be ok. Also, look up zig zagging. It's a type of diet that you fluxuate higher cal days with low cal days.

I call it a loss and move on. I don't restrict more the next day to make up for it,, because that will just leave me hungry and binging again. I just try to stick to the calorie goal for the rest of the week. It's good to have a cheat day once a week anyway.

Personally I just let it ride and get back on track the next day, however I know there are lots of folks that do extra exercise that day to offset the overage.

depends on how much you overindulge by. If it's a small amount, I would just shake it off and move on. If it's a lot, you might try to make some of it up slowly over the course of the week, but don't try to make up too much at once or you'll just feel like crap. Also , switching things up by going a little over one day and a little under the next is supposed to be good for weight loss because it keeps your body from getting to used to one or the other. It actually helps your metabolism burn energy more efficiently

I let it go and move on. What is important is that we understand that this is a lifestyle change not just a diet. So there is going to be lots of days where we might "slip up" but thats ok, as long as we dont go back to our old ways and eat it everyday. We can have "bad" foods but in moderation. Thats the key I think. Im slowly learning not to beat myself up everytime I eat a bar of chocolate but then I remember its ok, because i didnt eat 7 bars haha. Dont worry about it, just pick up where you left off the next day, and if you are really worried about it, workout that little bit harder the next day!

I have one day (Friday) where I go out with my family. I sometimes go a litte over but I try not to by saving the bulk of my calories for dinner. If I do go over, I call it a wash and start over the next day. Im getting better at it though!!

Ok, sounds like I need to get back on the bandwgon! I posted this only 30 minutes ago! Boy this site is supportive :) Thanks everyone for their thoughts. Dieting alone is hard. Dieting AND exercising is double trouble because the exercise makes me hungry. I'm going to do my best today. Thanks again everyone! Have a happy diet :)
