TOP ATE Calorie-Saving Cooking Swaps!

1. Nonstick cooking spray instead of oil (for stovetop cooking)
2. Canned pumpkin instead of eggs & oil (for baking)
3. Light vanilla soymilk instead of milk or cream
4. Fat-free liquid egg substitute instead of eggs
5. No-sugar-added applesauce instead of butter
6. Ground-beef-style soy crumbles instead of ground beef
7. Splenda No Calorie Sweetener (granular) instead of sugar
8. Butternut squash instead of potatoes

    i def. agree with all of those!!! except for the splenda which someone just recently posted a report on showing that it is composed with CHLORINE!! YIKES! i used splenda every day in my coffee, but since i read that i've stopped completely, cuz thats just plain scary! Loved all the alternatives, i used to make a delicious batch of pumpkin choco chip cookies...MMMMM (with the canned pumpkin!!)

    i agree about the splenda. when I read this I was hestitant to include it but didn't want to edit her list. i do believe that everything in moderation is acceptable.

    I disagree about the "light vanilla soymilk instead of milk." In general soymilk has more calories than skim milk. And it has a tofu-like flavor that is disagreeable to most people who aren't used to it.

    As for instead of cream, it depends on what you want to do. Add to coffee? Sure. Whip it? No way.

    With any substitutions, you need to be aware of changes in taste or texture. And just the fact that there are some things an egg can do that canned pumpkin never will! Mix canned pumpkin and eggs, and there you have a winning combo. :wink:
