Hi everyone! I am going out to a Malaysian/Thai fusion restaurant for dinner tomorrow. I don't even know what that is, let alone what some healthy choices would be, lol! Any and all suggestions are sincerely appreciated!

aaah! I love Malaysian and Thai food...i spent this past summer in Malaysia...and let me tell you it's a lot of sauce based meat and some kind of carb. Regardless of what you order those are the basics...so you'll be fighting against your portion size...thats the only way to win this one. If you get rice...ask if they have brown rice!
hope that helps...add me and let me know how it goes!

Ooohhh, love Asian fusion but I'm Taiwanese and my family owns restaurants so I'm predisposed to enjoy Asian food immensely...
Right, so..avoid anything with cream. All the curry's made with coconut milk. Normally a portion has at least half a can of coconut milk. It's not the worst of dairy but it still adds on calories. Nothing fried, Malaysian and Thai likes fried food a lot...and sometimes just because it doesn't say fried, it doesn't mean it hasn't been fried. Basically, to cook the food faster, a lot of the time, chef would throw meat into the fryer and quick fry then stirfry. I used to watch my uncle and mom do that all the time...
Check for grilled, grilled chicken like satay but go easy on the peanut sauce, it's loaded with sugar. Grilled seafood or similar.
I think you just have to think of this as a reward meal because Malaysian/Thai cuisine are normally quite greasy. Don't eat roti chennai..it's Malaysia bread. It's super yummy but it's made with lard!
If you get a noodle dish, like a noodle soup, eat the goodies and don't finish the broth. All the fattiness are all in the broth. When I would visit Taiwan, my mom would always tell me, eat the noodles and the meat but leave the broth.
Lastly, eat 80% full. It's really helped me to keep a mindset that I don't eat past 80% full.
I hope this helps!

Big fan here!!!! Always wise choices are anything with rice noodles if you must. Choose veggies or vegetarian dishes, research online see what your best options are or close too them out of what ever you like or will choose. allmenus.com may even have the menu posted...look up a similar calorie count on here or google it. I always make up my mind BEFORE i go. once i make up my mind i stick to it..0

Oh, man.... This is going to be more difficult than I thought. I am loving the suggestions, though. Hopefully they will keep coming in...0

Start with the mango or papaya salad. Super yummy and not fried. The biggest offender in there will be the peanuts, which are good fats anyway.
That way you can order something else small (like a soup) and be full of good things, plus not miss out on the awesome flavours.
Have fun!! :drinker:0 -
Hmm...Mango salad? Yes, if they have that, it sounds like an excellent start.0
