I am still nursing my 9 month old son about 4-5 times a day. MFP gives me 300 extra calories. Do you eat your extra calories given? I have been because of my milk supply decreasing, but I feel like it is affecting my weight loss =( Any Suggestions?!

i eat my extra, and i give myself 400 extra for breast feeding. although i haven't seen much of a weight loss either so maybe i shouldnt be! but i haven't tried toooooooo hard yet. i think its best to eat the calories to make sure there are enough nutrients for the little one and yourself :)

I've always heard that if you're breastfeeding you should eat between 1500-1800 calories a day if you're trying to lose weight.

I'm still breastfeeding my daughter who will be 10 months old on Sunday. I never noticed a drop in my supply but every woman is different. I can get away with eating 1500-1600 calories/day since I have more weight to lose. You can also try to increase your milk supple by eating certain foods such as oatmeal or fenugreek (an herbal supplement you can buy as capsules or in teas, etc.).

You might also consider talking to your doctor, pediatrician, nutritionist, or a lactation consultant to find out what works best for you.

I do and it is not effecting my weight loss. I don't think it is anyways...
  • I don't have a certain answer but I was considering not eating ALL of the extra calories, just 150. I would also increase your intake of oatmeal. That's going to be my strategy, my son is 6 weeks old and I exclusively pump. I can't afford a decrease in supply but I can't maintain my current weight either. It's just not healthy.

I am happy to add you as a friend so we can be a resource and support to each other.

I lost 34 pounds in about 5 months and I ate at least 1700 calories a day (500 were for breastfeeding). You can eat them and lose. Oh, by the way, I also ate most of my exercise calories when I worked out so I often ate over of 2000 calories.
  • my little one is 5 months old, i exclusively pump and give him bottles. I get about 40-50 oz a day since he's still mostly drinking breastmilk. At first i was very frustrated with no way to factor in breastfeeding on here, what a relief it was to figure it out. I was seriously starving trying to follow it. I do the one that gives you 300 extra calories also. Some days I feel fine with that, and other days I am very hungry. I decided not to deprive myself, so I try to really think "am I genuinely hungry?" If i come up with a yes, i eat, even if it goes over what MFP says. I try to not go over 500 extra calories, so since you're already subtracting 300, you'd be over 200. So far I've lost over 13 pounds :) so it's definately working.
