Butter or margarine? Finally an answer!

So many people debate over which is better for you, butter or margarine. I am a HUGE advocate for clean eating! I came across this little tid bit in my Muscle & Fitness HERS magazine.

Land O'Lakes Butter with Canola VS. Smart Balance Buttery Spread Original

What is the better choice????
Winner: Land O'Lakes Spreadable Butter

-Since the wisening-up of the margarine companies on the trans-fat issue, so many so-called "buttery spreads" now claim to have done away with all hydrogenated oil, making them trans-fat-free and healthier than ever.

But what about the other ingredients?
Although Smart Balance lists a "natural oil blend," it's followed by a SLEW of preservatives, and natural and artificial flavors and colors.

In contrast, the backside of the Land O'Lakes is noticeably stark, listing only 3 ingredients: sweet cream, canola oil and salt.

If you simply can't stand dry toast, go for the real deal and just cut down the serving size.

Totally agree with this. Although, I also use real whole butter.

I usually use regular butter, but sometimes it is nice to have the spreadable stuff on hand (esp if it is on sale!)

Butter only has 2 ingredient, lol!

I don't even touch margarine. Ever, ever, ever. If I'm going to a seafood restaurant where I know they give you those little margarine packs, I will actually take a tiny 1-oz container of butter in my handbag. That may be ridiculous, but hey . . . oh well.

My favorite butter is Kerrygold Irish butter. It is a deep yellow color and tastes amazing. The ingredients: pasteurized cream, salt.

Real butter, unsalted. Aside from the ingredients in margarine/spreads (which are plain scary), I think a "tub" makes it too easy to use way more than you need.

It is definitely worth buying. It comes wrapped in foil (gold for salted, silver for unsalted) and the shape is different from other butters around here: shorter and fatter than the long sticks.

I get mine at Trader Joe's, but I've also seen it at Giant.

At family functions on my husband's side of the family, margarine is never allowed, lol! If a recipe calls for margarine too bad! In the long run, butter is better with less ingredients some goes with ice cream ( I would rather eat homemade or ice cream that has less than five ingredients than one with several additive preservatives, etc). All in moderation of course!

Real food is better than fake food. I highly recommend the book In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.
